Abstract: A strip-like microneedle device is provided that includes an array of hollow microneedles, a diaphragm pump to extract interstitial fluid from skin, and a sensor that detects the concentration of the fluid. The microneedle device can be interfaced to an external sensor to produce a reading, or can be self-contained. One version uses an attachable/detachable microneedle array as a single-use, disposable unit. The device is portable, and is used by placing one finger on the microneedle array, and actuating the diaphragm pump with another finger, thereby obtaining the fluid sample. Solid coated or transparent microneedles could instead be used as an in-situ sensor, with either electrodes or an optical sensor.

Abstract: A fluid-delivery apparatus for delivering a medicament to a patient is provided in accordance with the present invention. The apparatus includes a housing defining a passageway, a bellowed ampoule positioned to lie in the passageway of the housing, and a piston. The bellowed ampoule includes a body with first and second ends and is formed to define a cavity configured to contain the medicament. The piston presses the second end of the ampoule toward the first end to dispense the medicament from the cavity. In addition, the fluid-delivery apparatus includes a visible non-linear scale that represents the relationship between a volume of medicament delivered from the first end of the ampoule and a distance that the piston has traveled in the housing toward the first end.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an anti-free-flow valve to prevent fluid free-flow through a tube assembly having a lumen. The valve device comprises a body disposed inside the lumen having a cylindrical portion formed adjacent a tapered portion, the cylindrical portion includes an opening and the tapered portion has a pair of beveled surfaces with ends that form a slit therebetween. The slit communicates with the opening through a passage formed through the body of the valve device. When the tube assembly is in a relaxed condition, the ends of the beveled surfaces confront one another and place the slit in the closed position which prevents fluid flow through the passage of the body and through the valve device.
Abstract: Device for withdrawing Blood for Diagnostic Purposes. A lancet holder (8) for holding a lancet (7) and a lancet drive (12) having a loadable elastic drive spring (15) are provided within an elongated housing (2). The relaxing motion of the drive spring (15) is converted into a puncturing motion, after release of a locking device, to move the lancet (7), held by the lancet holder (8), at high speed in the puncturing direction until its tip exists out of an exit opening (5) of the housing (2).
An improved handling and simultaneous minimization of pain is achieved by providing a two-sided rotary/translatory transmission (25) in the housing (2), wherein
a) the input side (24) of the rotary/translatory transmission (25) transforms the motion of a loading button (17), protruding out of the rear end (16) of the housing.
