Abstract: A solution is proposed for reducing the response time of query submitted by a client to server and, at the same time optimizing the sorting time of the results. Some canonical sorting algorithms are conceived to produce the first sorted records as soon as possible even if the sort operation is not completed. Even if such kind of algorithms match the above described needs, they could become impracticable because of their computational complexity. On the other side, some other algorithms have a lower computational complexity but the sorted result can be available only after the last iteration when the algorithm has completed. The present invention provides an improved method which combines the advantages of both families of algorithms.

Abstract: The image forming apparatus of the present invention includes a storage unit storing therein a database that contains a plurality of setting value strings of executed jobs. Here, each setting value string (i) indicates a setting condition used in a corresponding executed job, and (ii) includes setting values, each of which is associated with a different one of setting items and indicates a setting mode of the associated setting item. When a reception unit receives a setting value for a new job from a user, a search unit searches the database for a setting value string related to the received setting value. A display control unit displays the setting value string found by the search unit on a screen.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for extending the capabilities of a client device (e.g., consumer premises equipment in a cable network) using one or more on-demand applications. In one aspect, an improved media handling extension is provided within the device with which the various application(s) can interface to facilitate on-demand interaction between the CPE and the head end or other network entity. In one exemplary embodiment, the client device comprises a digital set-top box (DSTB) having Java-enabled middleware adapted to implement the OCAP/ACAP/MHP mandated Java Media Framework (JMF) APIs. A specially configured application is downloaded to the DSTB and run, the application configuring the paths within the device to provide, inter alia, media access to the on-demand application(s) according to one or more network specific protocols. Accordingly, the network MSO can also uniquely configure the CPE within its network for on-demand capability according to its own specific protocols from the head-end.

Abstract: The present invention discloses methods and systems for hosting tenants over a network in a computer-based environment in which a provider may store a shared data structure having shared data. A tenant receives a request for a shared data structure and retrieves the shared data structure from the provider based on shared metadata identifying the locations of shared data structures stored at the provider. In addition, based on extension metadata, the tenant retrieves an extended data structure including tenant-specific elements unique to the first tenant. The tenant server then combines the shared and extended data structures into a combined data structure including the tenant-specific elements.

Abstract: Systems and methods for managing data, such as metadata or non-metadata such as content. In one exemplary method, a composite document is received and it is determined whether the composite document contains at least one subdocument and if it does, the method captures metadata and/or content from the subdocument and stores the captured metadata and/or content for use in future searches (or an immediate search). The metadata and/or content from the composite document is typically combined together with information about the hierarchy of the subdocuments in the document. The type of information in metadata for one type of file differs from the type of information in metadata for another type of file. Other methods are described and data processing systems and machine readable media are also described.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and products are disclosed for user defined preferred DNS routing that include mapping for a user in a data communications application a domain name of a network host to a network address for a preferred DNS server, wherein the preferred DNS server has a network address for the domain name; receiving from the user a request for access to a resource accessible through the network host; and routing to the preferred DNS server a DNS request for the network address of the network host, the DNS request including the domain name of the network host. In typical embodiments, mapping a domain name to a network address for a preferred DNS server is carried out by storing, through the data communication application, the domain name in association with the network address for a preferred DNS server in a data structure in computer memory.

Abstract: A system and method are provided for enabling telephone users to place information on a network that is accessible by a variety of devices from disparate communication protocols are provided. A telecommunications network provides access to one or more servers to one or more customers. A customer that is provided access to the server is enabled to create a basis of operations called a phonesite. The phonesite is constructed and arranged to allow read, write, and execute privileges to the customer and to those designated by the customer. Files and other information on the phonesite can be accessed and edited from, for example, a standard telephone, a personal computer, a personal digital assistant, a web cam, an instant message client, and the like. Customers are given a single number with which to access the phonesite, or to allow others to access the phonesite.

Abstract: A system and method automatically learns mailbox configuration conventions. The validator module determines a valid set of configuration parameters used for accessing an electronic mailbox of a user within a mail domain after receiving configuration information from the user that is limited in the configuration parameters required for accessing the electronic mailbox. A learner module accepts from the validator module a set of configuration parameters determined to be valid and generates configuration conventions for a mail domain. A database store is the generated configuration conventions. The validator and learner modules can be operative as part of a web server.

Abstract: A content providing system comprising a content distribution server and a content receiving terminal connected to each other through a communication channel. The content distribution server includes a content storage unit in which content items are stored in association with at least time information and attribute information concerning the time information, a search unit searching, in response to a content providing request, the content storage unit for at least one content item according to a search condition based on the time information and the accompanying information, and a distributor distributing at least one content item to the content receiving terminal. The content receiving terminal includes a time information input unit receiving the input of time information, a request sender sending a content providing request including the input time information and accompanying information to the content distribution server, and a provider providing at least one content item to a user.

Abstract: Electronic document classification is disclosed. A toolbar adds the ability to classify documents based on specific properties such as security classification, information type, document type, document retention, document caveats, and the like associated. The toolbar through dropdown selections allows users to select the appropriate classification and properties based upon the content of the document and have appropriate classifiers added to the document. Document classification properties are generated that are associated with the document in the document properties and by inserting visual markings that allow users to quickly identify the security, sensitivity, intended distribution or retention. By utilizing the classification toolbar a user can classify an document by one or more classification levels and be ensured that the classification will be visible to any person viewing the document.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a unified user interface for instant messaging and electronic mail. In one aspect, a single user interface is provided to allow a user to view email and instant messages. Instant messages and email are received and displayed within a common window within a single application. In one aspect, an instant messaging input field is associated with an email message. For example, in one aspect, when a user associated with an email message is available for instant messaging, an input field appears in a preview pane for the email message. In another aspect of the present invention, instant messages may be managed like an email, e.g. filed, printed, forwarded, stored in folders, etc. For example, in one aspect, a transcript of an instant messaging session may be forwarded as an email.

Abstract: The present invention is intended to acquire a tabulation result corresponding to changes in questions based on the knowledge that question contents are changed as time advances from a point of generation of a cause of the question and to acquire a tabulation result corresponding to questions issued from customers with question contents changing as time advances from a point of purchase of equipments, etc. Solution information for questions from customers is provided by forming a question group consisting of questions based on purchase of equipments, etc., by using the question group to tabulate the questions for each elapsed time period from a point of a cause of the question to a point of generation of the question, and by ranking the questions from the tabulation result.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for processing metadata search with plug-in applications is disclosed. In one embodiment, in response to a search request for metadata stored in a metadata store, a plug-in associated with the metadata store is invoked to perform the request search within the metadata store. In addition, according to another embodiment, a search result of the metadata search may be filtered based on user privileges of a client initiating the search request, and some or all of the metadata from the search result may be returned to the client dependent upon the user privileges of the client. Other methods and apparatuses are also described.

Abstract: Provided is a method and system for redirecting data access requests in a clustered computing environment. A clustered namespace applied to the clustered computing environment includes multiple modules for storing and manipulating data. The clustered namespace is enabled by using a replicated storage location repository listing storage locations distributed throughout the clustered computing environment. When searching for data, pathnames to storage locations are examined and compared with values listed in the storage location repository to identify a storage location to visit. A module associated with an identified storage location is visited to satisfy a data access request. If a redirection identifier is encountered when examining the metadata of the identified storage location, then the storage location repository is examined to find the next storage location to visit to satisfy the data access request.
