Abstract: A resin composition for bonding of foundry sand, said composition comprising as a resin component a crystalline unsaturated polyester being solid and substantially tack-free at room temperature and having an acid value of 15 to 100, said unsaturated polyester being prepared by polymerizing (A) a dicarboxylic acid component containing 10 to 50 mole % of terephthalic acid, an alkyl terephthalate, isophthalic acid or an alkyl isophthalate and 50 to 90 mole % of fumaric acid and (B) a glycol component containing at least 90 mole % of ethylene glycol, trimethylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, hydrogenated bisphenol A or 2,2-d-(4-hydroxypropoxyphenyl)propane.
Abstract: The process concerns stabilization of polymers against ionizing radiation where the polymer molecule contains a halogen. It comprises incorporating hydroquinone into the polymer, especially into polyvinyl chloride, the polymer containing both a metallic compound, heat stabilizer, and also a mercaptan.
Abstract: The heat stability of arylene sulfide polymers, such as poly(p-phenylene sulfide), is improved by the addition of cure retarders comprising Group 8 metal dihydrocarbyldithiocarbamates.
Abstract: The heat stability of arylene sulfide resins, such as poly(p-phenylene sulfide) resin, is improved by the addition of cure retarders comprising certain organotin compounds such as the dialkyltin dicarboxylates. The resin compositions of the invention are particularly applicable for reducing gel formation during melt extrusion.
Abstract: A polymeric material which is capable of forming high modulus, biaxially orientable structures of a cholesteric mesophase, wherein said polymeric material comprises an optically active monomer which is condensation co-polymerized with at least one p-phenylene containing monomer which is itself capable of forming a polymer exhibiting a nematic mesophase, or which is capable of being copolymerized with a second monomer to form a nematic mesophase, or which is capable of being copolymerized with racemic mixture of said optically active monomers to form a nematic mesophase, wherein the resulting copolymer is characterized by a degree of inflexibility sufficient to form a mesophase and wherein said optically active monomer is present in said polymer after copolymerization in an amount sufficient to impart optical activity to said polymer sufficient to form a cholesteric mesophase.

Abstract: An organic high polymer composition having an improved flame retarding property which is obtained by incorporating into a flame resistive composition comprising (a) an organic high polymer substance, (b) an organic flame retarder and (c) incombustible active inorganic powder (d) a polyfunctional compound and (e) an organic compound represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein Z is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, A is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 divalent hydrocarbon group having or not substituents and forming a ring together with the adjacent two carbon atoms and B, and B is an oxygen atom or an amino group: --NY-- (Y being a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an organic group having not more than 30 carbon atoms) or its hydrolyzate.
Abstract: Nylon polymer compositions are rendered flame retardant by incorporating therein an effective flame retardant amount of a salt of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole and a metal from the group consisting of Zn, Mn, Ba, Ni, Co, Fe, Cu, Mo, and Cr.
Abstract: A novel diester compound of the formula (I): ##STR1## wherein each of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 represents a group of the formula (II): ##STR2## wherein m is an integer of 1 to 5, is found to be capable of imparting excellent flame-retardancy to various inflammable polymeric materials such as polystyrene, polyester, polyamide, polyphenylene oxide, etc. without deleterious effects on other physical properties of such polymeric materials.

Abstract: Esters of alkyl thiomercaptophenols, such as bis[2-(3,5-ditertiary butyl-4-hydroxyphenylthio)-1-methylethyl]thiodipropionate, used as antioxidants to stabilize polymers against oxidated degradation.
Abstract: In accordance with this invention there are provided organic antimony stabilizer compositions effective in stabilizing halogen containing organic polymers against the deteriorative effects of heat comprising (1) at least one organic antimony compound having at least one antimony to sulfur to carbon (i.e. Sb-S-C) linkage, (2) elemental sulfur, and (3) at least one 2-mercaptocarboxylic acid. Said 2-mercaptocarboxylic acid and elemental sulfur also serve to provide hydrolytic and UV light stability to the antimony compound per se. Also provided are stabilized organic polymer compositions comprising a halogen containing polymer and said organic antimony stabilizer composition.
Abstract: A polyvinyl chloride blend contains, as a smoke-reducing additive, a copper (II) hydroxide phosphate of the composition Cu.sub.3 (PO.sub.4).sub.2.Cu(OH).sub.2 in amounts from about 0.1 to 20 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of polyvinyl chloride. The thus-treated polyvinyl chloride is not discolored by the addition of this copper compound a significant advantage when compared to conventional copper compound additives.
Abstract: Oligomers prepared from alkoxycarbonylalkyleneamino halotriazines and diamines are useful as light stabilizers for polymers subject to ultraviolet radiation degradation.
Abstract: A heat-aging-resistant rubbery polymer composition comprising a rubbery polymer, at least one compound selected from the group consisting of diphenylamine derivatives and phenol derivatives as an age resister for said rubbery polymer, and polyalkylene ether glycol having an average molecular weight of 100-5,000, and optionally a compound represented by the formula, ##STR1## in which R is alkyl having 10 to 20 carbon atoms. Preferably, said at least one compound selected from the group consisting of diphenylamine derivatives and phenol derivatives is chemically linked to said rubbery polymer as a part of the molecular chain. Said rubbery polymer composition is unexpectedly superior in heat-aging-resistance to a composition consisting only of said rubbery polymer and said age resister or a composition consisting only of said rubbery polymer and said polyalkylene ether glycol.

Abstract: Compounds of the general formula (I) ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 is an .alpha.-branched alkyl group having 3 to 12 carbon atoms, cyclohexyl, phenyl or .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzyl and R.sub.2 is methyl, isopropyl, tert.-butyl, tert.-pentyl, 1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl, nonyl, 1,1,3,3,5,5-hexamethylhexyl or .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethylbenzyl, only one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 being 1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl and at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 possessing at least 8 carbon atoms, and R.sub.3 is hydrogen or methyl, or R.sub.3 together with R.sub.2 is 1,1,3,3-tetramethyl-1,3-propylene, are suitable as stabilizers for organic material to protect it against thermo-oxidative and light-induced degradation.
