Abstract: Disclosed is a process for the preparation of alkyl aryl ketones, cycloalkyl aryl ketones and diaryl ketones by contacting an aromatic compound with an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid in the presence of a catalytic amount of an organic sulfonic acid while removing the water of reaction as an azeotrope from the reaction mixture.
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of trimelitic acid from pseudocumene is disclosed. The pseudocumene is oxidized in the presence of a cerium, cobalt, manganese, and optionally zirconium, bromine catalyst wherein all of the cerium is added in the second stage of the oxidation, and wherein most of the bromine is also added during the second oxidation stage. Trimellitic acid is useful in the manufacture of polyester and polyamide-imides.
Abstract: Antibacterially active and animal growth-promoting novel .beta.-lactam compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 represents the radical ##STR2## Y representing N or CR.sup.9, or Y--R.sup.7 representing >C.dbd.O or >C.dbd.N--R.sup.7,Z representing O, S, or NR.sup.10, andR.sup.2 represents hydrogen or a protective group.

Abstract: Described are compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen, loweralkyl, aminomethyl or halo; R.sub.1 is carboxy, carboxyloweralkyl, aminocarbonyl, hydroxymethyl, anilinomethyl, or aminomethyl; A is oxygen, CH.sub.2, Sulfur or a single bond; X is oxygen, CH.sub.2, sulfur or sulfoxide; and Y is hydrogen, loweralkyl or halo and may be the same or different, and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof.The compounds are effective as diuretic agents.
Abstract: A composition and method for treating the hair and skin characterized by a greasy, unaesthetic appearance to reduce or essentially eliminate this greasy appearance which includes topically applying to a human having hair or skin so characterized a cosmetic composition containing as an active ingredient a cis or trans 3,4-thiolannediol, its cis or trans S-oxide derivatives or its cis or trans S-dioxide derivatives.
