Patent number: 4166417Abstract: A boosting device including a thin, cylindrical shell of high explosive, such as PETN, which may be formed by a spiral wrap of detonating cord. The shell is formed around an inert core which is either a solid cylindrical body, a hollow cylindrical body or a web-like structure having radial spokes or a hollow center. Detonation of the shell is initiated at one point on the shell, and the detonation proceeds along opposite sides of the cylindrical shell to a point diametrically opposite the initiation point where the detonation fronts meet thereby producing a shock reinforcing effect. The shock reinforcing effect allows a relatively small amount of explosive to initiate even low sensitivity blasting agents.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 1977Date of Patent: September 4, 1979Inventors: Sidney H. Woodcock, Michel E. Maes

Patent number: 4166418Abstract: An improved delay primer unit for detonating an explosive material in a borehole with a detonating cord down line extending into the borehole. The primer comprises an explosive element capable of detonating the explosive material upon being detonated, means for preventing direct detonation of the explosive element by the down line, a time delay detonating element extending between the down line and the explosive element with a known detonation time delay value between first and second ends of the delay element, means slidably associating the first end with the down line and means for connecting the second end in detonation relationship with the explosive element. The improvement in this type of unit is the provision of the explosive element as a support element and a detonating cord wrapped around the support element to form a primer.Type: GrantFiled: May 23, 1977Date of Patent: September 4, 1979Assignee: Austin Powder CompanyInventor: Brooke J. Patent number: 4164904Abstract: A projectile adapted to be fired at supersonic velocity from a gun barrel includes a tubular body of substantially circular cross-section having a leading inlet end and a trailing exit end and a central passageway extending therethrough. The leading end of the body is of a shape such that the internal diameter of the central passageway decreases from the leading inlet end to a throat region. The ratio of the cross-sectional area of the passageway in the throat region (A.sub.t) to the cross-sectional area of the passageway at the leading inlet end (A.sub.i) is sufficiently large and is so related to the projectile velocity at launch as to enable a normal shock wave to pass through the throat region to establish supersonic flow in the passageway and thus provide a relatively low aerodynamic drag after launching. The ratio A.sub.t /A.sub.i also has a value less than 1.0 so that as the velocity of the projectile decreases to a predetermined flight Mach number, which is a function of the A.sub.t /A.sub.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 1978Date of Patent: August 21, 1979Assignee: Her Majesty the Queen in right of Canada, as represented by the Minister of National DefenceInventor: Maurice A. Patent number: 4161142Abstract: A blasting booster comprises a rigid tube filled with a mixture, by weight, of about: 60% to 80% ammonium nitrate prills ground through a 1/16" screen; 12% to 35% whole ammonium nitrate prills and 3% to 8% diesel oil. Preferably the mixture includes about 0.4% to 10% aluminum fuel and the weight ratio of ground to whole prills is about 4 to 1. In use the booster tube is plastic lined and is placed in the bottom of a bore hole which is filled with AN-FO or an appropriate blasting agent. A one-pound cast primer on top of the booster is detonated to initiate the booster and the AN-FO, whereby detonation velocities and pressures in excess of non-boosted AN-FO, for example, are achieved in the critical bottom three feet of the bore hole. Bore hole patterns, where the booster is used, are expanded over tighter patterns required for non-boosted AN-FO alone, and drilling costs are significantly reduced.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 1977Date of Patent: July 17, 1979Assignee: Southern Explosives CorporationInventors: Donald W.
