    Abstract: A surgical instrument includes a housing, and a shaft including a proximal end, a deflectable portion and a distal tip. A handle is movable between first and second positions on the housing, and an actuator is movably coupled to the handle, such that movement of the handle between its first and second positions causes a corresponding movement of the actuator between first and second positions in the housing. A deflection wire includes proximal and distal portions, the distal portion being fixed to the shaft, and the proximal portion being affixed to the housing so as to provide a path length for the deflection wire within the housing. The movement of the handle causes the actuator to move to its second position, the second position of the actuator causing an increase in the path length for the deflection wire so as cause a deflection of the distal tip of the shaft.

    Abstract: A light-emitting diode (LED) therapeutic apparatus includes a body portion formed of a light-weight resin material into a rectangular housing; a printed circuit board including a plurality of LEDs having different emission colors mounted linearly in a plurality of rows at required intervals; a thermal radiating plate provided with a plurality of thermal radiating studs formed of a light-weight thermally conductive material; and a transparent plate mounted on an opening surface of the body portion. The thermal radiating plate is mounted in tight contact in the body portion, and the printed circuit board is mounted in tight contact with the heat radiating studs. The heat generated by the LEDs is radiated from the surface of the body portion via the thermal radiating plate from the thermal radiating studs. The LEDs may be maintained to a junction allowable temperature or lower so that a long life span without noise is achieved.

    Abstract: The light capsule object of the present invention is an ingestible device designed to illuminate the gastric cavity of the stomach for therapeutic purposes directed against Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria. It comprises: a casing transparent to visible light, in turn containing punctiform light sources, preferably constituted by LEDs, positioned immediately under said casing and capable of emitting light at appropriate wavelength bands (preferably 405 nm and 630 nm); a battery, adapted to power the LED sources for approximately 20-30 minutes (the average transit time in the stomach); a switch which allows a delayed power on and allows the tablet to be still “off” when it is swallowed. The light emitted by the capsule strikes the H. pylori bacteria anchored on the gastric wall. The light radiation is preferentially absorbed by molecules of porphyrin produced by the bacterium which works as photosensitizing agent by inducing the formation of cytotoxic molecular species.

In other embodiments, the cover can be a slideable or moveable low-profile sleeve or metal cover. During insertion, the sleeve or metal cover is positioned over the capillary. After insertion, the sleeve or metal cover is retracted to expose the area to be treated to side-fired laser energy transmitted from the capillary.
