  • Patent number: 8019707
Abstract: A hybrid recommender system, in which the initial stereotype is manually defined by an expert and an affinity vector of stereotypes relating to each specific user who registers onto the system, is created to define a specific profile for each user. Recommendations for a specific user are generated according to the initial stereotype and the affinity vector of stereotypes. A binary feedback, from user regarding specific items picked by him is received (e.g., while of the item), which can be either positive or negative. Then the affinity vector of stereotypes is updated.

  • Patent number: 8005772
Abstract: Cross over (S560) in a genetic algorithm (128) is adapted for deriving an optimal mask (S540), or set of segments of a line. Each mask of a chromosome is subject to cross over with the respective mask of the other parent. Any overlapping part, whether a filtering (320) or pass-through part (350), is retained in the child (334) to preserve commonality. The part is preferably, potentially extended, according to one parent or the other, as decided pseudo-randomly (430). In a preferred application, spectrums of candidate blood constituents are masked for fitting to ensemble spectrums of test blood samples (S610, S620). The developed masks are applicable to constituent spectrums to create masked spectrums (S710) which are then applicable to an actual blood sample to be analyzed (S720).

  • Patent number: 7953676
Abstract: A method for predicting future responses from large sets of dyadic data includes measuring a dyadic response variable associated with a dyad from two different sets of data; measuring a vector of covariates that captures the characteristics of the dyad; determining one or more latent, unmeasured characteristics that are not determined by the vector of covariates and which induce local structures in a dyadic space defined by the two different sets of data; and modeling a predictive response of the measurements as a function of both the vector of covariates and the one or more latent characteristics, wherein modeling includes employing a combination of regression and matrix co-clustering techniques, and wherein the one or more latent characteristics provide a smoothing effect to the function that produces a more accurate and interpretable predictive model of the dyadic space that predicts future dyadic interaction based on the two different sets of data.

  • Patent number: 7937335
Abstract: The invention comprises an article and method for transforming a complex or large decision tree having multiple variables; multiple values for each variable; and, multiple outcomes for each combination of variables and their associated values, into a compact, efficient graphical representation to provided enhanced ease of use and interaction by a human user. More particularly, the invention comprises a computationally efficient method for transforming an input decision tree into an optimal compact representation by computing a particular ordering of variables in the decision tree that first leads to a Directed Acyclic Graph, or “DAG,” with a minimum number of nodes. The method then converts the DAG into an exception-based DAG, or “EDAG,” with exactly one exception, having an optimal, minimum number of nodes with increased comprehensibility for a user.

  • Patent number: 7882046
Abstract: An ad system is described for providing ad selections in response to an ad presentation opportunity. The ad system can use multiple content providers to generate multiple sets of ad candidates. The content providers can apply different ad selection paradigms in generating their sets of ad candidates. The paradigms may act on different aspects of a context pertaining to the ad presentation opportunity. • Patent number: 7877335
Abstract: An improved system and method is provided for efficiently learning a network of categories using prediction. A learning engine may receive a stream of characters and incrementally segment the stream of characters beginning with individual characters into larger and larger categories. To do so, a prediction engine may be provided for predicting a target category from the stream of characters using one or more context categories. Upon predicting the target category, the edges of the network of categories may be updated. A category composer may also be provided for composing a new category from existing categories in the network of categories, and a new category composed may then be added to the network of categories. Advantageously, iterative episodes of prediction and learning of categories for large scale applications may result in hundreds of thousands of categories connected by millions of prediction edges.
