  • Patent number: 8787122
Abstract: A tool for reporting a particular time using vibration is disclosed. The tool assigns a distinct vibration to separate hour regions and minute regions. The tool uses a short series of vibration pulses, one of which is the distinct vibration assigned to the hour region associated with the hour of the particular time, to indicate the hour. The tool produces the distinct vibration assigned to the minute region associated with the minute of the particular time, to indicate the minute to the nearest quarter hour. The total sequence of pulses consists of no more than five separate vibrations.

  • Patent number: 8764280
Abstract: An enhanced escapement mechanism provides improved isolation of energy and torque for an oscillation system, e.g. a pendulum. In an exemplary embodiment, during a first phase, a pendulum releases an impulse arm that is decoupled from a main wheel, which falls and impulses the pendulum, such as at or near the middle of the pendulum swing. In a second phase, the impulse arm continues to fall, becoming totally detached from the pendulum, wherein the falling impulse arm releases the main wheel, which restores the impulse arm to its initial position. The main wheel continues to rotate until it is no longer in contact with the impulse arm, and is captured, such that the process may be repeated. While the enhanced escapement mechanism typically provides an impulse to an oscillation system during each period, alternate embodiments provide an impulse for each of a plurality of periods, e.g. once every ten periods.

  • Patent number: 8743663
Abstract: A high-speed rotating wheel rotates at high speed by a third stepper motor which meshes with a portion of teeth of a ratchet wheel. A transmission projection of the ratchet wheel moves within an elongated hole of a transmission wheel which rotates with the movement of the hour hand. The ratchet wheel rotates at high speed, and a display wheel rotates at high speed by the high speed rotation of the ratchet wheel via a feed wheel. When normally moving the hour hand, the ratchet wheel rotates with the transmitting wheel and the portion of teeth of the ratchet wheel is made to approach the high-speed rotating wheel. When the display of the display wheel changes, the high-speed rotating wheel meshes with the portion of teeth of the ratchet wheel and rotates the ratchet wheel at high-speed. Accordingly, the date display of the display wheel can be quickly changed.

  • Patent number: 8717854
Abstract: A timing device comprises a sensing material and/or a component which is sensitive to the presence of an environmental attribute. The environmental attribute drives and speeds up or slows the timing device as the concentration of the attribute increases or decreases, respectively. Alternatively, the timing device is activated upon sensing the presence of the environmental attribute and indicates a total passage of time from exposure/activation of the timing device. Particularly, sensing materials of varying types are able to be used to indicate exposure to a variety of substances. For example, in some embodiments, the timing device comprises a sensing material which is sensitive to the presence of ultraviolet radiation. Alternatively, the sensing material is sensitive to other variables such as x-ray radiation and nuclear radiation. In further embodiments, the sensing material is sensitive to biological or physical contamination.
