  • Patent number: 6741872
Abstract: The present invention consists of a method of authorizing access to a cellular mobile radio network from a simplified mobile telephone, simplified in particular in that it does not include a reader adapted to receive a subscriber identification module. According to the invention, access to the network is made possible in particular by a service initialization phase during which a subscriber to the network supplies to the network data representing a serial number specific to the simplified mobile telephone, for example its IMEI number, and data characteristic of each telephone number that can be called from the simplified mobile telephone, all of the data being stored in a data base of a server of the network in a private directory associated with the simplified mobile telephone.

  • Patent number: 6738637
Abstract: A communication system monitors the resources that are available for new users. When the availability of free resources becomes too small or falls below a threshold, the communication system initiates a reduction in the the class of service to selected users. The class of service can be reduced by reducing the quality of service provided to existing communications or by providing selected new users with only lower quality communications. The decision to alter the class of service is alerted to the end user and based on the profile of the end user, appropriate alteration of a specific resource parameter is undertaken.

  • Patent number: 6434383
Abstract: The invention provides a network paging system that includes a method and apparatus for sending messages to a subscriber. When one party attempts to contact another party, via a page message for example, the system may determine if the paged party is logged onto the network system. If the paged party is logged onto the network, the page message may be sent to the paged party's personal computer. If the paged party is not logged onto the network, the page message may be sent to the paged party's pager. Advantageously, the invention eliminates the need or expense of sending a message both via the Internet and a pager.

  • Patent number: 6427069
Abstract: A mixer converts input power at high-frequency RF into output power at a different and much lower frequency IF, with the assistance of another high-frequency oscillator (LO). Typically, a very low IF frequency requires an LO that approximates the RF frequency. However, a subharmonic mixer facilitates low IF with LO frequencies significantly lower than the RF frequency. This balanced odd-subharmonic mixer consists primarily of a four-port BALUN and a pair of diodes. The diodes terminate two ports of the BALUN connecting in series and in anti-parallel to the remaining external BALUN ports. The external BALUN ports constitute the RF and the LO high-frequency mixer ports. The mixer's lower-frequency IF port also connects to the diodes, comprising a separate channel that is co-linear with one BALUN external port, and coupling capacitively to the other. All three mixer ports meet at a mixing chamber (part of the BALUN) where the diodes are located.

  • Patent number: 6408174
Abstract: A communication device, method and system in which tariff information is provided to a communication device from a control station at call setup, and the charges associated with a call can be calculated and displayed to a device user at the device itself, rather than at a central communication system processor. The tariff information includes the current tariff, future tariff, and time of tariff switch. By providing the tariff information to the communication device, significant signal processing resources at the central communication system processor can be saved.

  • Patent number: 6405048
Abstract: A system and a method to automatically select a frequency set in a low-tier radio communication system, sharing frequencies with an overlapping high-tier cellular radio system, that minimally interferes with the high-tier system employing frequency hopping is described. The present invention makes use of the broadcast information that is transmitted by the high-tier radio base stations on their broadcast control channels (BCCH), which contains not only the BCCH carrier frequencies of surrounding cells, but also information regarding the frequencies applied in the considered cell for frequency hopping traffic channels. With this broadcast information, the low-tier system can derive the frequency planning of the high-tier system, and can then derive a frequency set for low-tier usage that minimally interferes with the overlapping high-tier system.

  • Patent number: 6400966
Abstract: A base transceiver station for a mobile communications system is disclosed, which is divided into a plurality of functional units that enables the signal processing resources to be flexibly allocated and cost-effectively implemented in hardware. A flexible communications interface is created between the base transceiver station units which allows the signal processing resources within the units to be used more efficiently. Essentially, the base transceiver station hardware is dimensioned to statistically distribute the signal processing resources among the different radio transmission services available. Consequently, the allocated base transceiver station hardware can be used more efficiently, which minimizes the overall size and weight of the base station.

  • Patent number: 6400944
Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for preventing sub-optimal routing of new incoming calls to a mobile station (MS) that has been re-registered at a remote optimal Mobile Switching Center/Visitor Location Register (MSC/VLR) for an optimized call. When the MS is re-registered at the remote optimal MSC/VLR, the Home Location Register (HLR) associated with the MS stores an optimization indication indicating that the MS has been re-registered to the optimal MSC/VLR. Thereafter, when an incoming call to the MS is received during the time that the MS is re-registered, the HLR can handle the call based upon the optimization indication. For example, the HLR can forward the incoming call to a local voice mail box associated with the MS.

  • Patent number: 6397050
Abstract: A squelch circuit for a radio receiver that detects the presence of speech by utilizing a filter bank for filtering an intermediate frequency or baseband signal from the radio receiver into band-pass signals, detecting the magnitude of the band-pass signals, and separating the signal magnitudes into a speech and noise detector. The speech detector determines if speech is present by determining if syllabic variations are present in the speech detector signals and selects a voice band average signal with a maximum difference in syllabic variations, and generates a speech detector decision when speech is present. The noise detector makes a noise detector decision when speech is present by obtaining a minimum noise detector signal and comparing the minimum noise detector signal to a threshold scaled voice band average signal associated with the maximum difference in syllabic variations.

  • Patent number: 6397051
Abstract: A system and method in which a dual image-reject mixer arrangement receives an RF signal having at least one channel. The dual image-reject mixer arrangement generates first and second signals corresponding to each channel of the RF signal. Each first and second signal includes a desired signal, an image frequency signal and an intermodulation signal. A feed-forward arrangement receives the first and second signals corresponding to each channel and outputs a third signal that is formed by constructively combining the desired signals corresponding to each channel and substantially cancelling the intermodulation signals corresponding to each channel. An in-phase and quadrature hybrid network receives the third signal and outputs an in-phase baseband signal and a quadrature baseband signal corresponding to each channel of the RF signal.
