  • Patent number: 8496700
Abstract: A device for replacement of a bioprosthetic valve having an annulus (104) and one or more leaflets (105), the device having an outer housing (106) and an inner shaft (108) with a distal end (110). The outer housing (106) is slideable relative to the inner shaft (108) such that a portion of the inner shaft (108) may be revealed. A cap (112) is associated with the distal end (110) of the inner shaft (108), the cap (112) movable between a first position adjacent the inner shaft (108) and a second position displaced from the inner shaft (108). The cap (112) is adapted to trap a skirted valve frame (102) between said cap (112) and the inner shaft (108) when in the first position. The skirted valve frame (102) may be released by the cap (112) upon sliding of the outer housing (106) relative to the inner shaft (108) to reveal the inner shaft (108) and upon movement of the cap (112) to the second position. Also disclosed are associated methods.

  • Patent number: 8496699
Abstract: An intravascular stent especially suited for implanting in curved arterial portions. The stent retains longitudinal flexibility after expansion. The stent is formed of intertwined meander patterns forming triangular cells. The triangular cells are adapted to provide radial support, and also to provide longitudinal flexibility after expansion. The triangular cells provide increased coverage of a vessel wall. The stent can have different portions adapted to optimize radial support or to optimize longitudinal flexibility. Loops in the stent are disposed and adapted to cooperate so that after expansion of said stent within a curved lumen, the stent is curved and cells on the outside of the curve open in length, but narrow in width whereas cells on the inside of the curve shorten in length but thicken in width to maintain a density of stent element area which much more constant than otherwise between the inside and the outside of the curve.

  • Patent number: 8475481
Abstract: A surgical cutting accessory that includes inner and outer tubes. A cutting feature is attached to the inner tube. The proximal end of the inner tube is connected to an inner hub. The inner hub has features for engaging a drive shaft integral with a handpiece to which the accessory is attached. The outer hub has features that facilitate the removable coupling of the hub to the handpiece. The outer hub is formed with a bore through which the inner tube extends. The outer hub also has an inlet port that extends from an outer surface of the hub to the main bore. Irrigation fluid can be flowed through this port into the annular space between the inner and outer tubes. A seal is located adjacent the inlet port.

  • Patent number: 8469996
Abstract: A two-sheet fascial expander prosthesis for temporary use and method of using it to treat abdominal hypertension and associated organ system function impairment, in which each flat sheet is attached to the fascia only at opposite sides of an incision. One side of each sheet is armed with mating fastening elements that bond when united to bring about high tensile shear strength and low tensile peeling-off resistance permitting easy separation for diagnostic and therapeutic abdominal entry. The invention is useful because it expands the fascia and adds compliance to the envelope of the abdominal cavity by bridging the gap between free borders of the incised fascia containing intra-abdominal organs without strangulating their blood supply and retaining some tension on the fascia to prevent retraction and bringing the edges closer together as healing progresses, and permitting final removal of the patch and fascia-to-fascia closure.

  • Patent number: 8449591
Abstract: A vascular occlusion device deployment system for placing an occlusion device at a preselected site within the vasculature of a patient. The deployment system employing a pusher having a lumen with an opening at the distal end of the pusher. A vascular occlusion device is connected to the distal end of the pusher by a portion that is removeably disposed within the opening. The portion of the occlusion device is forced out of the opening by an expandable reaction chamber, thereby deploying the occlusion device. The expandable reaction chamber, prior to deployment, has multiple chambers separated by a heat-dissolvable membrane. When the membrane is dissolved, components from the chambers react and expand, leading to deployment.

  • Patent number: 8430909
Abstract: A method for securing soft tissue to bone which does not require the surgeon to tie suture knots to secure the tissue to the bone. Suture is passed through the graft at desired points. A cannulated plug or screw is pre-loaded onto the distal end of a driver provided with an eyelet implant at its distal end. Suture attached to the graft is passed through the eyelet of the implant located at the distal end of the driver. The distal end of the driver together with the eyelet implant is inserted into the bone. Tension is applied to the suture to position the graft at the desired location relative to the bone. The screw or plug is advanced into the pilot hole by turning the interference screw or tapping the plug until the cannulated screw or plug securely engages and locks in the eyelet implant, so that the cannulated plug or screw with the engaged eyelet implant is flush with the bone.

Abstract: A patient's pharyngeal wall is treated by inserting an expander member into the airway and positioning an active portion of the expander member in opposition to portions of the pharyngeal wall to be treated. The expander member is activated to urge the wall portions outwardly to an outwardly displaced position. The expander member is then deactivated while leaving the wall portions in the outwardly placed position and the expander member is removed from said airway.
