  • Patent number: 5631329
Abstract: The specification discloses a process for producing poly-branched polymer having relatively high molecular weight by forming a first set of branches by polymerizing monomers which are either protected against or are non-reactive to branching and grafting during polymerization, grafting that first set of branches to a core having a plurality of reactive sites capable of reacting with the reactive end units of said branches, either deprotecting or activating a plurality of monomeric units on each of said branches to create branch reactive sites, forming a second set of branches in the same manner as the first set of branches were formed, grafting the second set of branches to the first set of branches by reacting the reactive end units of the second set of branches with each said branch reactive site on said first set of branches and repeating the foregoing steps reiteratively to form and attach subsequent sets of branches to prior branch sets until a desired number of iterations has been effected.

Abstract: An adhesive tape composition includes a polymer blend comprising at least one EPDM rubber, and preferably three EPDM rubbers in substantially equal amounts, and an adhesive-enhancing polymer selected from the group consisting of polyisoprene, polybutadiene, and ethylene-propylene copolymer and mixtures thereof. The tape adhesive composition further includes at least one tackifying additive compatible with said polymer blend and a sulfur and organic accelerator cure package for said polymer blend, the adhesive composition being devoid of butyl rubber which is found in most other adhesive tape compositions. This composition is seen as providing excellent long-term heat aging, weathering resistance, and low temperature properties as compared to adhesive tape compositions containing butyl rubber. Moreover, the adhesive tape composition provides more surface tack, better "quick-grab", and higher green strength as compared to adhesive tape compositions containing 100 percent EPDM rubber.

  • Patent number: 5605960
Abstract: Polymers containing a high percentage of vinyl alcohol units are difficult to process into sheet, film, injection-molded objects, or fibers. Such melt-processing is greatly enhanced by admixing certain core/shell copolymers having either a rubbery, crosslinked core mainly formed from polymerization of butadiene and/or of an alkyl acrylate, or a non-cross-linked core derived mainly of units derived from an alkyl acrylate, and an outer shell mainly formed from polymerization of methyl methacrylate. Such copolymers do not require the presence of functional groups capable of reaction with the hydroxyl groups of the poly(vinyl alcohol) to impart the improved processing.

  • Patent number: 5602206
Abstract: An anionic dispersion polymerization process is described for preparing linear block copolymers containing an odd number of blocks including blocks of polymerized styrenic compound, e.g., styrene, (A blocks) which are the end or terminal blocks of the polymer and which alternate along the polymer chain with elastomeric blocks of polymerized conjugated diene units (B blocks). The process includes initially contacting the total amount of styrenic compound to be utilized in forming the block copolymer under polymerization conditions with an anionic initiator and dispersant in an inert dispersion medium in which the polymer is insoluble and carrying out the process in stages wherein less than the total amount of styrenic compound is allowed to polymerize, alternating with stages wherein amounts of diene are added and allowed to polymerize completely. The addition of diene interrupts the polymerization of styrenic compound due to the greater tendency of diene to polymerize.
