  • Patent number: 4383852
Abstract: In a generally elongated reaction tube at an elevated temperature, a reducing gas stream is caused to flow along the axis of the reaction tube and a metal-halide gas stream diluted with an inert carrier gas is caused to flow in the same direction as but at a different velocity relative to the reducing gas stream. The two gas streams contact each other in a laminar manner and form an unstable interface region therebetween wherein the metal halide gas is reduced to form fine metal particles with uniform particle size.

  • Patent number: 4383870
Abstract: Single or ganged cutting torches for steel plates preheat the center of each hole to be cut prior to any displacement of the torches. On completion of the preheating, the torches are laterally repositioned in correspondence with the common radius of the holes to be cut. Simultaneously, the torches begin to cut and motive means initiates and maintains circular movement of each of the torches commensurate with the circumference of the holes to be cut. Positioning means for locating each of the torches in the X-axis and for translating the torches en masse in the Y-axis are disclosed. Means for accommodating bowing of the steel plate along with means for setting the torches to cut various diameter holes at any bevel angle are described.

  • Patent number: 4377276
Abstract: A self-propelling bevel fusion-cutting machine for beveling pipes comprises a machine main body which holds a fusion-cutter, such as a burner, for effecting the bevel fusion-cutting of the end face of a pipe, traveling guide rollers which roll on the pipe end face, and outer roller which rolls circumferentially on the outer peripheral surface of the pipe, and an inner roller which rolls circumferentially on the inner peripheral surface of the pipe. The machine main body is movable along the pipe end face by means of these rollers. The outer or inner roller is removably pressed against the peripheral surface of the pipe and this roller or the other roller is connected to a drive source mounted on the machine main body so as to be thereby driven for rotation.

  • Patent number: 4377409
Abstract: A columnar stainless steel short fiber having a diameter of 2 to 20 .mu.m. and an aspect ratio of the length to the diameter of 1 to 50. The short fiber is prepared by heat-treating a stainless steel fiber for adjusting the growth of crystal grains and subjecting the heat-treated fiber to intergranular selective corrosion in an acidic solution. The short fiber is useful as a material of sintered metallic filters, and sintered compacts of the short fiber have high porosity, uniform pore size, excellent mechanical strength and small pressure loss.

  • Patent number: 4376660
Abstract: A method for inducing superplastic properties in nonsuperplastic materials, metals or alloys, by mixing in powder form, the nonsuperplastic material with a second alloy having superplastic characteristics. The powder mixture is compacted into a billet and superplastically formed. The grain boundaries of the nonsuperplastic material are subsequently restored by heating the formed billet to a temperature slightly below the melting point of the second alloy.

  • Patent number: 4375994
Abstract: The invention is a method for inducing superplastic properties in nonsuperplastic metal and metal alloy powders by adding to such powders a small quantity of pure metal capable of alloying with the nonsuperplastic material to form a eutectic having superplastic properties. The powder is initially heated to the melting temperature of the desired eutectic to form the superplastic eutectic at the grain boundaries of the nonsuperplastic material. After forming, the powder is heat soaked to further dissolve the pure metal, destroying the formed eutectic and restoring the natural grain boundaries of the nonsuperplastic material.
