  • Patent number: 4340016
Abstract: An internal combustion engine comprises a combustion chamber and a piston movable relative to the combustion chamber between top dead center and bottom dead center positions. A fuel transfer passage introduces fuel-air mixture into the combustion chamber in response to piston movement. An auxiliary chamber is also provided which is communicable with the combustion chamber in response to piston movement shortly after the ignition of a fuel-air mixture, such that high pressure ignition gases enter the auxiliary chamber. The high pressure ignition gases thereafter flow back into the combustion chamber in response to piston movement before communication is established between the combustion chamber and the fuel transfer passage. The incoming flow of high pressure ignition gases serves to influence the normal scavenging streams.

  • Patent number: 4338798
Abstract: Apparatus for limiting the amount of torque to a driven shaft having a tool for applying power to a workpiece is continuously adjustable throughout a predetermined range. A housing defines a cylindrical chamber open at one end having an adjustable plate disposed therein. First and second shafts enter the housing through opposite ends and have first and second disks attached thereto within the housing. Disks are frictionally coupled by a force generated by a spring disposed about the first shaft between the adjustable plate and the first disk. When the preselected limit of torque is exceeded the disks slip with respect to one another thus, limiting the amount of torque delivered by the apparatus. Adjustment of the plate selectively increases or decreases the compression of the spring and thus, alters the maximal amount of torque that can be delivered. An alternative embodiment is disclosed for incorporating the apparatus within the housing of a power tool such as a drill motor.

  • Patent number: 4338905
Abstract: A method and apparatus for efficiently atomizing fuel for supplemental supply to an internal combustion engine are described wherein the atomized fuel is supplied to the engine in addition to the conventionally carburetted fuel. A portion of the fuel being supplied to a carburetor in a conventional manner is diverted to the system according to the invention and is supplied thereto in a metered fashion. A fuel vapor is produced and is supplied to the engine downstream of the carburetor, as required by the engine; this requirement being indicated by engine vacuum. Vaporization is accomplished in the described embodiment by heat and ultrasonic nebulization.

  • Patent number: 4336784
Abstract: An exhaust gas recirculation control system employs a flow rate valve in the recirculation line. The valve is operated by suction pressure obtained from two suction ports in the engine intake passage. Suction lines from those ports contain air inlet valves which dilute the suction pressure with atmospheric air, depending upon engine operating conditions. A fuel supply increasing valve is connected to a venturi in the engine intake passage and suction operated control means control operation of that valve. The result is an improved acceleration characteristic for the engine under load without substantial increase in discharge of pollutants into the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4333424
Abstract: The engine has a compressor which compresses air for delivery via a heat exchanger to an expander. The expander receives the compressed air and fuel and, while combustion occurs during a power stroke, the air pressure is reduced to atmosphere and the expander drives a crankshaft. The fuel is injected at a rate to maintain the air temperature at the entry temperature. The exhaust passes through the heat exchanger to heat the incoming flow of compressed air to the expander. Energy may be stored via the crankshaft or used directly.

  • Patent number: 4333440
Abstract: An apparatus is described for controlling recirculated exhaust gas quantities in self-igniting internal combustion engines which have a fuel injection pump. Two parameters, the rpm (preferably via the rpm-dependent suction chamber pressure) and the position of the quantity-adjusting device, are obtained from the fuel injection pump and delivered to a performance-graph memory in which a control value for the recirculated exhaust gas quantity is stored in accordance with these parameters. A recirculated exhaust gas quantity control device is actuated in accordance with the recalled control value.

  • Patent number: 4333439
Abstract: An apparatus is proposed for controlling the exhaust recirculation rate in an internal combustion engine, in particular an engine with auto-ignition, which includes preferably one mixture valve in the area of the discharge opening of the exhaust recirculation line and which is characterized in that the control is accomplished via the mixture valve position ahead of the inlet valves in accordance with the concentration of at least one component of the air-exhaust gas mixture and/or at least one component of the exhaust gas. Thus it is possible to operate the engine with a relatively emission-free exhaust. An exhaust gas reservoir is further provided, with which peaks in the exhaust gas concentration due to a dynamic driving mode can be intercepted. Finally, it is also proposed that the exhaust recirculation be realized solely via a pressure, which can be controlled in open-loop or closed-loop fashion, in the exhaust line by means of a valve.

  • Patent number: 4328781
Abstract: A cross-flow type internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas recirculating passage formed in the cylinder head. The passage is located adjacent to cooling water jackets so that the gas in the passage is cooled by the water in the jackets. The passage is formed with an expansion chamber which is also located adjacent to the cooling water jackets and the intake ports. Due to the cooling effect in the passage, water content in the recirculated gas is condensed and separated from the gas. Further, the gas flow speed is decreased in the expansion chamber so that carbon particles in the recirculated gas can be separated therefrom.
