The system includes a water container for containing water separate from the water in the tank. A conduit carries hot water from the tank to the container, passing in close proximity to the heating unit of the hot water tank. A duct leading from the container conveys water vapor formed in the container to a receptacle. The water in the receptacle having been evaporated and condensed is thus purified for domestic use.

The solvent removal may be conducted in a high pressure evaporator having an upper section and a lower section separated by an annular tray.

    Abstract: A draw rate signal generator for an atmospheric crude distillation unit receiving crude oil and providing streams 1 through 5 and a reduced crude oil includes flow rate sensors sensing the flow rates of the crude oil and of streams 1 through 4 and providing corresponding signals. Analyzers sample the crude oil and provide signals corresponding to the 35% point temperature, the API gravity and the vapor pressure of the crude oil. End point analyzers sample streams Nos. 1 and 3 and provide signals representative of the end point temperatures of streams Nos. 1 and 3, respectively. 50% point analyzers sample streams 2, 3 and 4 and provide signals corresponding to the 50% point temperatures of streams Nos. 2, 3 and 4, respectively. A circuit connected to the sensors, to the crude analyzers, to the end point analyzers and to the 50% analyzers provide signals corresponding to the draw rates for streams Nos. 1 through 5 in accordance with signals from the sensors and analyzers.

    Abstract: There is disclosed a water distiller, primarily for producing water for human consumption which includes a boiler with an electric heater, a fractional distillation tower extending about two or more feet above the boiler, a gas trap at the top of the tower, and a steam conduit exiting from the tower below the gas trap and leading into a condensation tube with a water-cooled jacket. The boiler and tower are of uniform cross-section to facilitate cleaning by running a swab through this tube. An unprocessed water inlet is located in the bottom of the water jacket, and at the top of the water jacket is an exit orifice for preheated input water. A conduit for preheated input water leads to the bottom-most part of the boiler of the distiller. An overflow conduit is provided which is directly opposite the preheated water inlet; the highest point of the overflow conduit serves to automatically regulate the depth and volume of water in the boiler.

    Abstract: A vapor compression distillation apparatus and method are provided wherein scaling tendencies are eliminated. The raw feedwater has acid added to it in an amount sufficient to convert the carbonates and/or bicarbonates therein to carbon dioxide. The heated acidified feedwater is then deaerated to remove the carbon dioxide and other non-condensible gases. The deaerated water flows to the evaporator through a line having a valve therein controlled by the liquid level in the deaerator to maintain such level constant even though the tube side of the evaporator is being operated at a pressure less than that of the deaerator. This permits the evaporation to take place under a partial vacuum and at a boiling temperature of less than 212.degree. F. even though the deaerator is operated at atmospheric pressure. Vent steam from the evaporator is added to the deaerator to further preheat the feedwater, and as a sparging or stripping agent to aid in the elimination of carbon dioxide and other non-condensible gases.

    Abstract: The presence of solid polymer in distillation columns and their associated reboilers used for the recovery of methacrylic and acetic acids produced by the oxidation of methacrolein may be minimized by the use of inhibitors and introduction of molecular oxygen at a rate above a predetermined threshold value, which is a function of the operating temperature of the equipment. For a given temperature, the amount of solids has been found to be greatly increased below the threshold value of oxygen, while above the threshold value, the rate of appearance of solids has been found to be minimized and further increases in oxygen rate have only a minimal effect. At a typical operation temperature of 120.degree. C., the threshold value of about 0.1 SLH O.sub.2 /100 gm of liquid. A gas containing a relatively high concentration of oxygen is preferred.

    Abstract: A process for producing organic liquid product from solid organic waste. The process comprises pyrolyzing the solid organic waste to produce pyrolysis vapors and solid pyrolysis residue. The solid residue is separated from the pyrolysis vapors leaving entrained particulate matter in the vapor. At least a portion of the pyrolysis vapor is condensed for producing pyrolysis liquid containing entrained particulate matter. The pyrolysis liquid is centrifuged producing a light fraction containing entrained particulate matter, a middle fraction substantially free of particulate matter and a heavy fraction containing entrained particulate matter. The middle fraction is recovered as organic liquid product substantially free of entrained particulate matter. The light fraction and heavy fraction are mixed and filtered. The liquid filtrate produced is distilled for producing additional organic liquid product.

    Abstract: A vapor compression distiller having a shell for enclosing a pair of heat exchange tube bundles each having one end connected to a steam chest and its other end connected to a condensate collecting chamber. A vapor compressor has its inlet connected to the shell and the outlet to one steam chest which is coupled to a second steam chest through a steam ejector for elevating the inlet pressure to the second heat exchange tube bundle. A half partition extends across the lower end of the vessel and between the wells to divide the lower portion of the vessel into two sections which are in communication across the upper end of the vessel. One well is connected to receive fresh feed liquid and the other includes a density sensor to discharge a portion of the concentrate to therein maintain a desired concentrate level and each well is connected to a spray nozzle manifold disposed in its respective shell section.

    Abstract: A water distillation apparatus having a feed water pre-heater, an evaporator tank, and a storage tank. The storage tank has an upper surface and depending walls, the pre-heater and evaporator tank being on the upper surface, and extending, with the other components, to approximately the same height, all components being within the periphery of the walls. A mixing vessel including a level controlling overflow pipe receives water from the pre-heater, and a short, straight, large diameter conduit connects the mixing vessel and evaporator tank. The pre-heater comprises two dished elements in facing relation, with a divider plate between them, the elements being joined at their peripheries. A serpentine path is provided in each of the two spaces of the pre-heater, formed by a pair of L-shaped separators extending linearly from one end of the space to a point spaced from the other end.

    Abstract: Water containing dissolved compounds is preheated, and is then pressurized in stages of water pressure, while receiving a quantum of steam. Scale-forming compounds in the water are thermally precipitated, and clarified post-thermal water is formed. This is flash vaporized in stages corresponding to the stages of water pressure, and the flashed vapors are compressed to form each said quantum of steam. Alternately, the flashed vapors themselves comprise each said quantum of steam, by being induced into the water as it flows through an eductor means. Flash-cooled, post-thermal water, substantially devoid of scale-forming compounds, is employed as such, or more generally is evaporated to form fresh water and an end concentrate of dissolved compounds.
