  • Patent number: 6854009
Abstract: A networked computer system has a plurality of servers and a plurality of distributed clients, which may be devices or computers. Each client has a boot operating system (OS). Upon startup, the boot OS in each client automatically initiates a connection to one of the servers via the Internet. The boot OS can detect the type of medium (e.g., cable modem, DSL) to which the client is connected. The server automatically downloads a base OS and dynamically configures a suite of applications on the client without running the standard installation programs. One included application is an Internet telephony application, allowing a user to plug a standard telephone into the client appliance or computer, pick up the telephone, and automatically dial out using long distance Internet telephony. Optionally, the server may download a plurality of operating systems that are automatically initiated to run concurrently on the client. The clients use a random access memory (RAM) caching technique.

  • Patent number: 6850986
Abstract: A method and system for implementing URL scheme proxies. Embodiments of the invention allow URL schemes that are not natively supported by a computer to be supported via proxy, e.g., using a URL scheme that is native to the computer to forward the non-native transport. More specifically, embodiments of the invention allow a first computer system to support a first URL scheme by encapsulating its transport information into another URL scheme that is natively supported by the first computer. The encapsulated information is then forwarded to a second computer system or server which can provide support for the first URL scheme transport. For instance, if the first computer supports http but does not support ftp, then an ftp transport can be encapsulated inside an http transport and then forwarded to an ftp server which can then extract and process the ftp transport. The ftp response can be handled in an analogous fashion. The invention increases the native URL scheme capabilities of a computer system by proxy.

  • Patent number: 6850881
Abstract: A device for Connection Admission Control for an ATM switch, intended for admitting to the switch a requested ATM connection of the DBR type, such that the “Quality of Service” of all ATM connections of the DBR type in said switch continues to satisfy certain conditions. For the composite traffic stream of DBR connections at an output port with capacity C, a single buffer with capacity B is available, while as boundary condition it holds that the total average load of the output port does not amount to more than ?×C, where ? is a constant with a value between 0 and 1. The CAC device comprises two sub-devices, which each execute a—rather complex—partial calculation, resulting in a positive or negative admission signal. The new ATM connection is only granted admission to the switch if both sub-devices emit a positive admission signal.

  • Patent number: 6845309
Abstract: A power steering system includes at least one motor to assist the operator of a vehicle in turning the wheels and steering the vehicle and at least one computer or microprocessor controller. One of the processors adjusts the motor assist torque to reduce the driver effort based on specified requirements defined by boost curves. A second microprocessor controller uses an algorithm to calculate the output of the power steering motor, and compare the relationship between the driver torque and the power assist torque. If the relationship between the two is out of specified bounds, then the power steering assist is deemed inappropriate and the power system may go to a power-off state to assure that the motor does not generate an undesirable torque that has not been requested by the driver.

  • Patent number: 6839742
Abstract: The invention maintains the context, e.g. the user's language and/or the user's country, while the user is navigating through different related sites or pages. The invention stores and maintains the information about the user's origin, language, country and product of interest during the navigation. This information is stored as arguments in the URL. A session application redirects the user into a particular page based on the arguments provided by the referring site or user's site. The application operates by matching the provided arguments against lookup tables that describe what is available on the main site. When a match occurs between the arguments in the URL and the lookup tables, the invention begins a session by storing information in the URL into a cookie that is stored on the user's computer. A navigation application will use the information stored in the cookie to return the user to their home page.

  • Patent number: 6839732
Abstract: A gateway provides communication of tightly coupled XA transactions to a server hosting a DBMS and makes efficient use of domain socket pairs to implement demultiplexing in the gateway. The gateway includes a TCP/IP listener process which accepts connection requests from a transaction manager. Logical agents represent the application connection and are managed by a logical agent scheduler and are passed within the gateway using domain socket pairs. Gateway agents are dedicated to identified tightly coupled XA transactions to provide tightly coupled XA transaction support for DBMS systems which do not provide such support directly. The domain socket pairs in the gateway are assigned to logical agent schedulers and are available in a domain socket pool. A wait queue is provided to buffer logical agents when connection to the server is not available or where there are no domain socket pairs available in the domain socket pool. The wait queue is itself implemented as a domain socket pair.

  • Patent number: 6836716
Abstract: A restraint system having a restraint device for protecting at least one passenger and a method for controlling a restraint system. The system and method act so as to to transform using a wavelet transformation, a signal measured by an acceleration sensor into a frequency range and in order to determine from the transformed signal the optimal triggering time point for the restraint device. For this purpose, the wavelet-transformed signal, on the one hand, is used for determining features in order to determine a crash type, and, on the other hand, to determine the braking acceleration energy. If the braking acceleration energy lies above a preestablished threshold value and if the identified crash type requires a triggering of the restraint system, then the restraint system is triggered.

  • Patent number: 6834217
Abstract: A method and a device for determining a variable describing the speed at least one driven wheel of a motor vehicle. In this context, variables describing the respective wheel speeds for the remaining driven wheels of the motor vehicle, and a variable describing the output rpm of a transmission of the motor vehicle are determined. To be able to make a reliable variable describing the speed magnitude of the wheel available to a traction control system or a vehicle-dynamics control system of a motor vehicle in spite of the failure of a speed sensor arranged at one of the wheels, the variable describing the speed for the at least one driven wheel is determined as a function of the variables describing the respective wheel speeds of the remaining driven wheels and as a function of the variable describing the transmission output rpm.

  • Patent number: 6832147
Abstract: In a vehicle with a gear-shift transmission of a kind that requires a torque-free state to shift gears, the riding comfort is improved by a method of shifting gears where a gear shift is preceded by the steps of: reducing the vehicle acceleration at a time t1 from an existing level (1) to a first acceleration level (3), maintaining the vehicle acceleration at the reduced level (3) for a predetermined time interval, and at the end point t3 of the predetermined time interval, reducing the acceleration further to a second acceleration level that is lower than the first level.

  • Patent number: 6832131
Abstract: A legged mobile robot possesses degrees of freedom which are provided at roll, pitch, and yaw axes at a trunk. By using these degrees of freedom which are provided at the trunk, the robot can smoothly get up from any fallen-down posture. In addition, by reducing the required torque and load on movable portions other than the trunk, and by spreading/averaging out the load between each of the movable portions, concentration of a load on a particular member is prevented from occurring. As a result, the robot is operated more reliably, and energy is used with greater efficiency during a getting-up operation. The robot independently, reliably, and smoothly gets up from various fallen-down postures such as a lying-on-the-face posture, a lying-on-the-back posture, and a lying sideways posture.
