The first and second excitation light beams have different colors. The first diffusion element is disposed on transmission paths of the first excitation light beam and the second excitation light beam, and the first diffusion element includes a first diffusion region and a second diffusion region with different diffusion degrees, wherein at least one of the first excitation light beam and the second excitation light beam sequentially passes through the first diffusion region and the second diffusion region. A projection apparatus is also provided. The illumination system of the invention effectively mitigates a speckle phenomenon of the excitation light beams to achieve a better optical efficiency.

An estimated image is established by using the plurality of test color data. Uniformity compensation information of each pixel is updated according to a target value and each piece of pixel information of the estimated image. An initial image is compensated according to the uniformity compensation information to generate a uniformized image, which is then projected by the projection device.

The images may be compared using blob detection or corner detection. Unlike prior art ‘off-line’ calibration methods, video frames can be processed continuously (e.g. every frame) or intermittently (e.g. every 10th frame) without interrupting the display of video content.
