  • Patent number: 6801769
Abstract: A modular aircraft information system is provided for communicating information onboard an aircraft. The modular aircraft information system includes a backplane and a network router module, and may include an avionics interface module. The backplane is capable of receiving at least one COTS device such that the COTS devices can be electrically coupled and/or decoupled to the backplane. The network router module can interface with at least one avionics device. The network router module is in electrical communication with the backplane and the avionics interface module such that the network router module is capable of passing communications between the COTS devices and the avionics devices when the COTS devices are electrically coupled to the backplane. The network router is also capable of isolating the backplane from the avionics devices such that the COTS devices, when electrically coupled to the backplane, are at least partially isolated from the avionics devices.

  • Patent number: 6801763
Abstract: A user while traveling may call an operator in an information/call center to request directions to a desired destination. In response, the operator obtains a directions file containing the requested directions. To facilitate the user receiving directions in installments in accordance with the invention, the directions file has an indicator associated therewith. The requested directions are read from the directions file to the user by an interactive voice response (IVR) unit via synthesized voice. The indicator is used to indicate in the file which direction is to be read to the user. The user may terminate the call after hearing a desired quantity of directions. When the user subsequently needs another installment of directions, the user may call back the IVR unit which then continues to read directions in the directions file from where the associated indicator indicates. The above process can be repeated, thereby enabling the user to controllably receive the directions in installments.

  • Patent number: 6801773
Abstract: An apparatus, method and system are provided for hand-off of a communication session in a mobile wireless communication system, from the serving base station to a target base station, utilizing a shared directory number associated with a first terminal of the serving base station which is providing the communication session with the mobile unit through a first call path. The serving base station includes a second terminal having the shared directory number associated with the first terminal. A switch, coupled to the serving base station and to the target base station, is configured, upon reception of a message from the serving base station, to establish a second call path from the second terminal of the serving base station to the target base station, and to bridge the second call path with the communication session of the first call path to form a multiway communication session, with the multiway communication session including a bridged call path to the target base station.

  • Patent number: 6799040
Abstract: An apparatus, method and system are provided for hand-off of a communication session from a serving base station to a target base station. The preferred system includes a switch coupled to the serving base station and to the target base station. Respective first and second terminals at the serving and target base station share the same directory number, with the first terminal of the serving base station providing the communication session with the mobile unit. For a hand-off, the target base station transmits a request designating the shared directory number to the switch. Upon reception of the request, the switch bridges the target base station, through a bridged call path, into the communication session, through a second terminal of the target base station having the shared directory number, to form a three-way communication session.

  • Patent number: 6799017
Abstract: A system for and method of providing Short Message Service (SMS) message notification to a cellular telephone customer regarding missed incoming calls that are missed while the cellular telephone is unavailable such as when the telephone is powered off. This is accomplished by generating a notification message at a SS7 gateway that includes caller ID/name ID information and/or time of the missed call. The message is preferably generated at the SS7 gateway only upon receipt of an “access denied” response with a reason code of at least one of MS Inactive, Busy, No Page Response or Unavailable that is sent from a home location register in response to a location request sent by the SS7 gateway. Once the generated message is complete it is sent to a message center where it is stored until it is retrieved by the cellular telephone soon after registration with the cellular network.

  • Patent number: 6799019
Abstract: A mobile telephone system and method having a base station for receiving data bursts during consecutive frames, each frame of predetermined time duration and divided into a plurality of slots of predetermined time duration. The base station has an antenna, base station electronics and preprocessing circuitry coupled to the base station antenna and the base station electronics. Delay circuitry is coupled to the base station preprocessing circuitry and base station electronics to provide the complement of a total time delay to the data bursts through the preprocessing circuitry and the delay circuitry equal to an integral number of the predetermined time duration of a frame. The time delay of the preprocessing circuitry can be fixed or variable, in which case the time delay of the delay circuitry is either fixed or variable, respectively.

  • Patent number: 6795690
Abstract: A duplex radio transceiver, coupled to baseband circuitry and to an antenna, includes a receive chain, a transmit chain and a duplexer. The transmit chain includes filter components that attenuate signals originating from the transmit chain in a receive frequency band by a stop-band attenuation that is approximately equal to or greater than the stop-band attenuation of the duplexer in the receive band. Similarly, the receive chain includes filter components filter components that attenuate signals in a transmit frequency band by a stop-band attenuation that is approximately equal to or greater than the stop-band attenuation of the duplexer in the transmit band. A bias control circuit senses a power level associated with radio signals in the transmit chain and adjusts an amplifier in the receive chain responsive to the power level.

  • Patent number: 6795712
Abstract: A closed power control feedback loop system allows a single portable transceiver architecture to be used for systems in which a transmit signal including both a phase modulated (PM) component and an amplitude modulated (AM) component are supplied to a power amplifier and in systems in which the transmit signal has only a PM component supplied to a power amplifier. By injecting the inverse of the AM portion of the desired transmit signal into the closed power control feedback loop, the feedback loop will not cancel the AM portion of the signal, thus allowing a system where both a PM component and an AM component of the transmit signal are present at the output of the power amplifier to function using a closed power control feedback loop.

  • Patent number: 6792260
Abstract: To provide a portable telephone output limitation management device in which use of a portable telephone set is automatically limited in a site where the use of the set is limited and in which causes of non-response and other various information can be transmitted to an originating party who called the use-limited portable telephone set. The portable telephone output limiting management device issues a radio wave signal of the output limiting command information from an antenna. On reception of the output limiting command information from the antenna, the portable telephone set enters into the output limiting mode to halt direct exchange with a base station and sends out the information on the fact that the set has entered into the output limiting mode.

  • Patent number: 6785542
Abstract: A method and system supporting location based services for a mobile electronic device that supports multiple wireless communication technologies. The mobile device contains a resource proxy for dynamically storing a set of resources that are available to the electronic device and that are location specific, e.g., accessible via a point that is near the electronic device. The resource proxy contains a resource table recording the available resources and a gateway table indicating a pathway for reaching the data. The resource proxy definitions are technology independent with respect to the communication mechanisms required to obtain the data. Resources are added to the resource proxy via a resource discovery mechanism automatically performed by the mobile device. Multiple network gateways can be defined and each is responsible for requesting and retrieving information for the resource proxy.

  • Patent number: 6782256
Abstract: Measuring wireless network performance from a remote site uses a mobile handset that may include an appropriate world wide network browser. A user connects the mobile handset to the remote site via the wireless network which is coupled to the world wide network. Once the connection is made, application software at the measurement site sends commands to the mobile handset and in response the mobile handset sends measurement data to the application software. The application software processes the data to provide information about the wireless network performance including analyses for predictive and diagnostic purposes, since measurement data from many handsets, many locations and many base stations at many times may be collected at one central location.

  • Patent number: 6778834
Abstract: The user of a mobile terminal enters keywords indicative of categories of messages he wishes to peruse. When the mobile terminal receives a message, keywords associated with the message are compared with the user-entered keywords; if any match, a banner portion of the message is displayed on the mobile terminal and the mobile terminal issues a sensible alert. The user may request to view the message body associated with the banner portion. The user may request to take actions regarding the message body, such as storing the message body in the mobile terminal or calling a telephone number contained in the message body.
