Abstract: Crosslinkable polymers and co-polymers are treated with organo-metallic compounds, inorganic metallic salts, or lanthanides prior to crosslinking with free radical organic peroxide initiators in the presence of oxygen. This pre-treatment eliminates tackiness of the surface of the crosslinked polymer making the crosslinked polymer more commercially acceptable.
Abstract: By reacting a diene polymer having nitrile groups with an anti-deteriorating agent having at least one polar group selected from the group consisting of amino group and imino group in the presence of a catalyst, a diene rubber can be obtained in which said anti-deteriorating agent is chemically combined to the nitrile groups. Said rubber per se has resistance to deterioration and, at the same time, acts as an anti-deteriorating agent for other diene rubbers. The chemically combined anti-deteriorating agent is not extractable with solvent, so that said rubber has a stable resistance to deterioration and a stable anti-deteriorating action on other diene rubbers.

Abstract: Polymer bound multidentate complexes are prepared by reacting pendant benzyl chloride and benzyl iodide groups on a variety of polymer supports, including crosslinked polystyrene, with 3,3'-iminodiproprionitrile and reducing the nitrile groups by treatment with, for example, a boron hydride-tetrahydrofuran complex to form the amine. The amine is a precursor for other ligand systems; for example, the primary amine groups formed condense with an aldehyde or ketone to yield five coordinate Schiff base ligands. The polydentate amine ligand systems are useful for synthesis of chelating agents for sequestering metal ions from solution for purification or concentration purposes. Metal complexes of these ligands with manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, and zinc can be prepared which are useful as heterogeneous oxidation catalysts.
Abstract: A novel fluorinated copolymer is prepared by copolymerization of a fluorinated olefin with a novel sulfur containing fluorinated vinyl ether of the formula: ##STR1## wherein k is 0 or 1 and l is an integer of 3 to 5, which is prepared from starting materials which are also novel. Said copolymer is useful for preparation of a fluorinated cation exchange membrane having carboxylic acid groups and/or sulfonic acid groups which can be used advantageously in electrolysis of an aqueous alkali metal halide solution with improved electrolysis performance.
Abstract: A novel fluorinated cation exchange membrane containing carboxylic acid groups and sulfonic acid groups, both in the form of a specific pendant structure, the carboxylic acid groups being at least 20% on one surface of the membrane and gradually decreasing toward the innerside of the membrane, which membrane is useful in electrolysis of an aqueous alkali metal halide solution with advantageously stable performance for a long term under more severe operational conditions than those conventionally used. The membrane can be prepared from a novel copolymer of a fluorinated olefin with a novel sulfur containing fluorinated vinylether of the formula: ##STR1## wherein k is 0 or 1, l is an integer of 3 to 5, Z is --S-- or --SO.sub.2 -- and R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl, an aryl, Cl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 perfluoroalkyl.
Abstract: The catalyst system disclosed herein comprises a combination or a chelate of a hydrocarbyl lithium compound with a dialkylaminoaldehyde dialkyl acetal having the formula R'.sub.2 N--A--CH(OR.sub.2) wherein R and R' are alkyl groups of 1-3 carbon atoms and A is a divalent aliphatic group of 1-10, preferably 1-3 carbon atoms, with a direct linkage of no more than 3 carbon atoms between the N and the --CH(OR).sub.2 group. This catalyst system is particularly useful in the polymerization of vinyl compounds such as ethylene, propylene, styrene, butadiene, etc. The process for the polymerization of conjugated dienes produces polymers of excellent properties. For example, with butadiene-1,3 and other appropriate conditions, polybutadiene with high percentages of 1,2-polybutadiene structure are produced.
Abstract: A polyperoxyketal compound is provided having at least one carboxy group, a hydrocarbon ester. An example of this compound is n-butyl gamma,gamma-bis(t-butylperoxy)valerate. This polyperoxyketal compound is used as a vulcanizing agent for thermoplastic polymers such as rubber and ethylene-propylene rubber.

Abstract: A reactive polyester resin composition comprising a polyester resin having ethylenically unsaturated terminal groups, and a reactive, aliphatic plasticizer compatible with the resin and having ethylenically unsaturated terminal groups. By virtue of the terminal ethylenic unsaturation, the composition can be cross-linked with, e.g., styrene to form a tough, flexibilized, corrosion resistant polymer. The high level of corrosion resistance is maintained notwithstanding the impressive degree of flexibility imparted to the composition.
