  • Patent number: 5144861
Abstract: In order to permit a steering wheel to be simply connected to a steering shaft having a frusto conical tapered portion, a serrated or splined portion and a threaded portion, in a manner which permits ready adjustment of the wheels' position which respect to the shaft, the central boss of the steering wheel is divided into separate upper and lower boss members. The lower boss member seats on the tapered portion and is rigidly connected with the steering wheel. The upper boss member fits on the serrated portion so that relative rotation is prevented. By tightening a nut on the threaded portion of the steering shaft, force can be applied through the upper boss member to the lower one in a manner which produces a frictional engagement between the lower boss member and the tapered portion which prevents relative rotation.

  • Patent number: 5131894
Abstract: A shaft retention system is disclosed that is particularly useful for attaching an axle to a side gear in a differential case. The shaft preferably has an inner end with opposed flat surfaces that extend to a groove in the shaft. A spring washer and clip having mating flats are mounted on the inner end, with the flats on the spring washer and clip aligned with the flats on the shaft end. The clip is then rotated relative to the spring washer, and tabs on the spring washer snap into a notch in the clip preventing further rotation between the two. In this position, the flats on the clip no longer align with the flats on the inner end of the shaft preventing removal of the spring washer and clip from the shaft. The clip is preferably C-shaped, with the notch formed by the open end of the C.

  • Patent number: 5129871
Abstract: A shaft connected to a component of a planetary gearset is driveably connected by a coupling to alternate friction elements in accordance with the relative speeds of the coupling members and the direction of rotation of the driven coupling member. The coupling includes a radially inner one-way coupling and an outer one-way coupling, the outer race of the inner coupling and inner race of the outer coupling being the intermediate race, which is connected to the gearset. The inner race and outer race have cam surfaces contacting roller clutch elements located in a cage and spaced mutually about the coupling axis. The cam surfaces of the races are inclined with respect to the adjacent surface of the intermediate race in opposite directions, so that when one coupling drives, the other coupling overruns.

  • Patent number: 5123300
Abstract: A compact phasing transmission having an infinitely variable adjustment to the relative phases between the input shaft and output shaft of the transmission is disclosed. A harmonic drive pancake gear set is incorporated between the input shaft and output shaft of the transmission. A pancake motor is enclosed within the phase transmission and is coupled to the harmonic drive pancake gear set to provide input to the wave generator of the harmonic drive. The intermeshing of the pancake motor and harmonic drive between the input shaft and output shaft of the phasing transmission will cause the two shafts to rotate at the same speed. When the pancake motor is activated, the wave generator of the harmonic drive gear set will rotate thereby varying the phases between the input shaft and output shaft of the phasing transmission.
