  • Patent number: 4898093
Abstract: The franking value or stamp index wheels mounted in the franking head of the franking machine are adjusted by in each case one pinion, which meshes with the engagement tooth system of a rack. In addition, each rack is provided with a driving tooth system electromagnetically operated by adjusting rams and a retaining tooth system in which engage two retaining pawls. An electromagnetic drive engages and disengages the retaining pawls with the retaining tooth system when the machine main shaft is in the set position. A sensor monitors the engagement movement of the retaining pawls, so that an incorrect position of the racks and therefore an incorrect setting is detectable by the franking machine control unit.

  • Patent number: 4889439
Abstract: The invention automatically divides the text at the end of the page in such a way that widow lines and orphan lines of text do not exist. The typewriter shifts the effective page end point to shift the orphan line of text to the next page of text or delays the page ending to accommodate the widow line on the present page rather than forcing the line to the top of the next page. The text is not altered in the memory of the typewriter and no stop codes or page end codes are inserted in the text memory, thereby eliminating revision problems with the paginated text.

  • Patent number: 4886384
Abstract: A ribbon cassette, such as in inked ribbon for a printing machine, has a supply spool and a take-up spool. An unwinding force is applied to the ribbon and the take-up spool is driven from the supply spool through a slip coupling. The configuration of the driving connection between the spools is such as to lead to a theoretical speed of the take-up spool which is always geater than is actually needed to match the speed of unwinding from the supply spool. Slip however occurs to match the speeds and to maintain tension in the ribbon.

  • Patent number: 4883375
Abstract: A guide shaft guides a print head, which moves along a print line of a platen to perform a printing operation. A rotating member and an eccentric cam member, having a toothed sector portion on its periphery, are mounted on the guide shaft. The guide shaft is guided on a frame by a bearing slot, so as to be movable toward and away from the platen. The eccentric cam member rotates as it is always spring-urged to engage a fixed engaging pin. As a result, the guide shaft moves in a direction transverse to its axis, thus changing a gap between the print head and the platen. As the eccentric cam member rotates in one direction, the print head moves away from the platen, in a retreat stroke. In a rear half of the retreat stroke, the toothed sector portion of the rotating member engages a toothed arm, which is connected to a paper bail member for holding a printing medium down on the platen.
