  • Patent number: 7578639
Abstract: A tool for chip-removing machining includes a holder on which in indexible cutting insert is mounted. The holder includes a first base surface on which a plurality of male parts are disposed to define an insert seat. The insert includes generally parallel second and third base surfaces, each having a plurality of female parts disposed therein. The insert is invertible such that the female parts of one of the second and third base surfaces receive respective male parts of the holder. A fastener secures the insert on the seat, with the male parts tightly fitted in the female parts. The male parts are flexible relative to the first base surface to ensure a firm abutment of the male parts with surfaces of respective female parts.

  • Patent number: 7574947
Abstract: A high bandwidth rotary fast tool servo provides tool motion in a direction nominally parallel to the surface-normal of a workpiece at the point of contact between the cutting tool and workpiece. Three or more flexure blades having all ends fixed are used to form an axis of rotation for a swing arm that carries a cutting tool at a set radius from the axis of rotation. An actuator rotates a swing arm assembly such that a cutting tool is moved in and away from the lathe-mounted, rotating workpiece in a rapid and controlled manner in order to machine the workpiece. One or more position sensors provides rotation and position information for a swing arm to a control system. A control system commands and coordinates motion of the fast tool servo with the motion of a spindle, rotating table, cross-feed slide, and in-feed slide of a precision lathe.

  • Patent number: 7568409
Abstract: A machine tool assembly includes a high speed rotating spindle for forming extremely precise surface contours on a work piece. The spindle is supported on a spherical air bearing about its center of gravity. The spindle can be rotated through an air turbine drive system incorporated into the spherical air bearing to eliminate any undesirable moments about an axis perpendicular to the long spindle axis. The spindle is adjustable in pitch and yaw directions through the influence of X-Y actuators. The X-Y actuation system is preferably electromagnetic and provides a non-contact method of displacing the spindle shaft in a controlled manner at any speed.

  • Patent number: 7547163
Abstract: A clamping tool holder includes a tool holder body and a clamp for clamping a cutting insert. The clamp causes the cutting insert to press against the bottom and the side walls of an insert-receiving pocket of the tool holder body. The tool holder body has an inclined surface sloping inward in a direction away from the insert-receiving pocket. The clamp has an inclined surface that acts as a ramp with the inclined surface of the tool holder body. A guide pin prevents the clamp from twisting during tightening or loosening of the clamp. When a clamp screw is tightened, a nub of the clamp engages only an inside rearward surface of a mounting bore of the insert along a line of contact and the top surface of the cutting insert. In addition, only a forward lower face of a head portion of the clamp screw engages a top surface of the clamp.

  • Patent number: 7546787
Abstract: A dynamic spindle adjustment permitting an adjustment movement for the compensation of a wobble of the body held by the work spindle is provided on the spindle bearing of a machine tool. The regulation is designed at least dynamically enough for the regulation to permit a reliable tracking of the rotating work spindle. As a result of this, one or more spindles can be moved relative to a stationary machine in such a manner that the path of a body held on the work spindle represents an ideal rotation about the desired body axis, that is, the axis of symmetry. The compensation motion can be achieved by energizing appropriate actuators of the bearing devices with sinusoidal and cosinusoidal adjustment signals, which are superimposed to produce a circular motion of the affected bearing device. This circular motion compensates for orbital motions of the misaligned body (7) held on the work spindle.
