Abstract: An adhesion-improver which comprises a reaction product of an amino compound having a primary and/or secondary amino group in the molecule or a modified amino compound obtained by modifying the amino compound with a compound having an epoxy group, and a carbonyl compound, particularly a dicarbonyl compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and are each an alkyl having 1 to 16 carbon atoms, an aryl having 6 to 12 carbon atoms or an alkoxy having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, R.sup.3 is a hydrocarbon group having one or more carbon atoms, and n is 0 or 1, is used to prepare a curable composition such as an adhesive, sealing agent, paint or pourable compound.

Abstract: A highly dilatant copolymer dispersion containing, as essential components, an emulsion copolymer prepared from 1 to 10% by weight, based on the sum of the monomers employed, of .alpha.,.beta.-monoolefinically unsaturated carboxylic acids and other olefinically unsaturated monomers, in which the emulsion copolymer is prepared in the presence of from 5 to 30% by weight, based on the sum of the monomers employed, of allyl carboxylate or alkylallyl carboxylate containing 2 or more copolymerizable olefinic double bonds, or a mixture thereof, the alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 C atoms, and the preparation thereof.

Abstract: According to this invention, there is provided a denture adhesive which is a mixed partial salt of a terpolymer of maleic anhydride, (MA) a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl vinyl ether (AVE) and isobutylene (IB) vinyl ether, having a weight average molecular weight of about 30,000 to 400,000, preferably about 50,000 to 350,000. The terpolymer has its components in the molar ratio of MA:AVE:IB of about 1:0.4-0.9:0.1-0.6, preferably about 1:0.5-0.8-0.2-0.5.

Abstract: Vinyl ether copolymers and a method of preparing the same. The vinyl ether is copolymerized with styrene, alkyl-substituted styrenes, alkoxy-substituted styrenes and mixtures thereof. In the process, a cadmium halide is used with hydrogen iodide or a suitable iodine containing electrophile, as the coinitiator.
Abstract: Terpolymers of maleic anhydride, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl vinyl ether and a C.sub.12 -C.sub.14 alpha-olefin, and crosslinked products thereof, are provided herein for use in thickener, adhesive, sunscreen, hair spray, and waterproofing compositions. The alpha-olefin comonomer is a hydrophobic, straight chain, unsaturated hydrocarbon such as dodecene or tetradecene, which is present in the terpolymer in predetermined amounts relative to the hydrophilic maleic anhydride component, to provide a terpolymer having a suitable HLB for these applications.

Abstract: A process for producing a polymer by ring-opening polymerization of a norbornene-type monomer, which comprises starting the ring-opening polymerization in the presence of a Ziegler-type catalyst consisting essentially of an organometallic compound of a metal belonging to the groups I to III of the periodic table and titanium tetrahalide, carrying out the ring-opening polymerization until the norbornene-type monomer shows a conversion ratio of not less than 60%, and then adding a tungsten and/or molybdenum-based metathesis catalyst to the polymerization reaction system to continue the ring-opening polymerization.
Abstract: Benzotriazole compounds having the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is H, Cl, or OCH.sub.3 ; R.sub.2 is a hydroxynaphthyl group; and R.sub.3 is a vinyl unsaturated polymerizable group. Homopolymers or copolymers thereof are effective as UV light stabilizers and absorbers.

Abstract: What is described herein is a process for making copolymers of maleic anhydride and C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl vinyl ethers of predetermined specific viscosities extending over a wide viscosity range. The invention is characterized by (a) precharging a reactor with a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl vinyl ether as solvent and a polymerization initiator at a reaction temperature, (b) feeding a mixture of maleic anhydride and a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl vinyl ether in substantially stoichiometric amounts, preferably with a slight excess of alkyl ether, and at a selected rate, into said precharged reactor, (c) polymerizing said reactants to form a slurry of said copolymer in said escess alkyl vinyl ether solvent, and (d) introducing toluene into said reactor during the polymerization to control the specific viscosity of the copolymer product being produced.
