Patent number: 5265016Abstract: A method is disclosed for obtaining an estimate of the shear velocity in a formation material. Utilizing compressional velocity (V.sub.p) and density (.rho.) of the formation material, formation aggregate mineral parameters and formation pore fluid parameters together with a relationship that the frame bulk modulus/frame shear modulus is approximately equal to the bulk modulus of the aggregate mineral grains/shear modulus of the aggregate mineral grains, to obtain an estimate of the shear wave velocity (V.sub.s) of the formation material. The present invention is primarily designed for use in the areas where shear wave velocity (V.sub.s) measurements are unobtainable due to unconsolidated formations, and specifically, wherein the acoustic velocity of formation fluids and/or wellbore fluids is greater than the desired shear wave velocity.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1992Date of Patent: November 23, 1993Assignee: Amoco CorporationInventors: Kenneth E. Patent number: 5260868Abstract: A mechanism and method for calendaring a plurality of events such as scheduling the operation of interrelated machines which perform a process flow. Future time is divided into segments, called buckets, of increasing length. The first two buckets are of the same size and each of the following buckets twice as large as its preceding bucket. The first bucket slides so as to always cover a specified length of time following the current time. Events scheduled in the calendar is added to the appropriate bucket, depending on how far in the future it is to take place. When the current time equals the scheduled time for an event, then that event is removed from the bucket where it resides. When a bucket has become empty because all events have been removed from it, the events in the following bucket are distributed over the two buckets preceding it.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1991Date of Patent: November 9, 1993Assignee: Texas Instruments IncorporateInventors: Subhash Gupta, Sanjiv S. Patent number: 5227971Abstract: An apparatus for and a method of selecting a target language equivalent of a predicate word in a source language word string for use in a machine translation system in which use is made of a dictionary having records, each including data on an entry word of a predicate source language word, on predicate target language words equivalent to the entry source language word and on semantic features of non-predicate words related to a case governed by the predicate target language words or including data on an entry word of a non-predicate source language word, on a non-predicate target language word equivalent to the entry source language word and on semantic features of the non-predicate target language word.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1989Date of Patent: July 13, 1993Assignee: Hitachi, Ltd.Inventors: Hiroyuki Nakajima, Hiroyuki Kaji

Patent number: 5224036Abstract: An apparatus for determining the probability that the shadow of a tumor designated on a radiation image of an object is the shadow of a malignant tumor on the basis of an image signal representing the radiation image includes a spectrum calculating means, a characteristic value calculating means, and a judging means. The spectrum calculating means obtains the spectrum distribution of the image signal D(r,.theta.) whose coordinates are expressed in polar form with the origin taken as the approximate center of the shadow. From the spectrum distribution the characteristic value calculating means obtains a characteristic value, which the judging means uses to determine the probability that the shadow of a tumor is the shadow of a malignant tumor.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 1990Date of Patent: June 29, 1993Assignee: Fuji Photo Film Co., Ltd.Inventors: Wataru Ito, Shoji Hara

Patent number: 5193059Abstract: The present invention is a method of logging a formation for permeability using a logging tool that is calibrated to dynamically correlate macroscopic porosity measurements to microscopic permeability measurements for the formation. The correlation is determined from hydraulic unit characterization factors which are calculated from parameters of the formation determined in an analysis of core material taken from the hydraulic units determined to be in the geologic units. The hydraulic units are identified from the relationship of direct permeability and porosity measurements with calculated hydraulic unit characterization factors for the formation.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1991Date of Patent: March 9, 1993Assignee: Western Atlas International Inc.Inventors: Djebbar Tiab, David M. Patent number: 5032990Abstract: Rapid x-ray inspection of objects larger than an x-ray detector array is based on a translate rotate scanning motion of the object relative to the fan beam source and detector. The scan for computerized tomography imaging is accomplished by rotating the object through 360 degrees at two or more positions relative to the source and detector array; in moving to another position the object is rotated and the object or source and detector are translated. A partial set of x-ray data is acquired at every position which are combined to obtain a full data set for complete image reconstruction. X-ray data for digital radiography imaging is acquired by scanning the object vertically at a first position at one view angle, rotating and translating the object relative to the source and detector to a second position, scanning vertically, and so on to cover the object field of view, and combining the partial data sets.Type: GrantFiled: May 30, 1989Date of Patent: July 16, 1991Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Jeffrey W.
