  • Patent number: 6196709
Abstract: A lightguide illumination system is disclosed for providing more improved and efficient technology for capturing light from an extended light source having a relatively high aspect ratio, and coupling that light into a plurality of lightguides. The inventive systems functions by dividing the length of the extended light source into shorter segments, so that the aspect ratio of the light source can be more closely matched to the aspect ratio of the lightguide. In the preferred embodiment, a plurality of interleaved trough reflector segments are employed to segment the length of the light source. This enables the coupling efficiency of the total system to be greatly improved.

  • Patent number: 6193394
Abstract: A direct-indirect luminaire has a housing and down light passage areas in the bottom of the housing through which the direct lighting component of the luminaire is produced. Lamps mounted in the housing in proximity to the down light passage areas are shielded from any line of sight exposure by means of a laterally extending shielding element positioned between the down light passage area and the lamps. Preferably, the laterally extending shielding element extends a distance sufficient only to prevent lamp sight exposure of the lamps through the down light passage area.

  • Patent number: 6193395
Abstract: A lamp assembly adjustable between narrow beam and wide beam light distributions, the lamp assembly is particularly intended for housing lamping or the like for mounting to industrial emergency unit fixtures of differing size and conformation. At least one and preferably two of the lamp assemblies are mounted to a unit fixture in spaced relation to illuminate critical areas within an industrial or commercial space during emergency conditions, such as failure of mains power, to allow evacuation of the space. In order to illuminate the desired areas, each of the lamp assemblies can be adjusted along an internal track to allow light to be directed toward a particular location within a wide range of possible locations, thereby facilitating illumination of the most desirable area in the vicinity of the unit fixture for a particular mounting location. Additional flexibility in the delivery of illumination to a desired area is provided by adjustability between narrow and wide beams.

  • Patent number: 6168303
Abstract: A vehicular lamp equipped with an extension for covering a gap formed between a lamp body and a reflector. To improve air circulation, the extension includes a lower frame portion which has openings for communicating the area proximate the inner face of the lens with a back area of the extension. The openings are located at left and right positions of the frame portion, respectively. Furthermore, venting holes for communicating between the inside and outside of the lamp body are formed in the lamp body at positions opposed to the openings, and a shroud for introducing air flow along the inner face of the lamp body extends between the venting holes and the openings. The openings ensure a sufficient amount of air flow in the vicinity of the inner face of the lens. A rear surface of the light-guiding plate 1 having a planar front light-emitting surface 2 is worked by a tapered knurling method to form a light-diffusing surface 3. Two discharge tubes are disposed as light sources outside a side surface 4 of the light-guiding plate 1 in parallel to the light-emitting surface 2 as well as to the side surface 4 so that a virtual plane defined by both central axes of the two tubes intersects substantially perpedicularly the side surface 4. One of the discharge tubes located inside is a red neon tube 5 formed of a transparent glass while another of the discharge tubes located outside is a cold cathode fluorescent tube 6 which emits a desirable luminescent color except for the red.

  • Patent number: 6129439
Abstract: An optical illumination system comprising a waveguide that accepts light generated by a light source and transmits the light via total internal reflection. Attached on one face of the waveguide is an array of microprisms, with each microprism having an light input surface, a light output surface and at least one sidewall which is tilted at an angle from the direction normal to the surface of the waveguide and further comprising at least two planar faces such that light escapes from the waveguide, reflects off the tilted sidewalls and emerges from the microprism as a spatially directed light source. An array of microlenses may be positioned to accept the output of the microprisms so that the light exiting from the microlenses is a substantially collimated light source. The optical illumination system is advantageous for any application that requires a non diffuse or substantially collimated light source that is both energy efficient and contained in a low profile assembly.
