  • Patent number: 8857218
Abstract: An apparatus for manufacturing strengthened glass containers, and more particularly the construction and operation of a cooling tube nozzle in an apparatus for thermally strengthening glass containers in a glass container manufacturing line at a location intermediate the hot end and the cold end. Glass containers formed at an I. S. machine are conveyed through a special tempering Lehr that heats them uniformly to a high temperature that is short of temperatures at which they may become deformed. Subsequently, the glass containers are rapidly thermally strengthened in a cooling station in which the outer and inner surfaces including all areas of the glass containers are simultaneously cooled to a temperature below the Strain Point of the glass used in the glass containers, with the cooling tube nozzles being used to cool the inner surfaces of the glass containers.

  • Patent number: 8839643
Abstract: When fixing a glass layer 3 to a glass member 4, a region to be fused R from an irradiation initiation position A in the region to be fused R to the irradiation initiation position A is irradiated therealong with a laser beam L1, and successively an unstable region extending from the irradiation initiation position A in the region to be fused R to a stable region initiation position B is therealong irradiated with the laser beam L1 again, so as to remelt the glass layer 3 in the unstable region, turn the unstable region into a stable region, and then fix the glass layer 3 to the glass member 4. Thereafter, a laser beam L2 fuses glass members 4, 5 together through the glass layer 3 having the whole region to be fused R turned into the stable region, so as to yield a glass fusing structure 1.

  • Patent number: 8753180
Abstract: A machine which provides for both leaf stripping and grading can be used to process plants, such as burley tobacco plants, by continuously moving the plants in a first direction while simultaneously varying the position of the plants in a second direction relative to a defoliating apparatus. The plants may be moved horizontally through a machine by a transporter engaging the plant stalks while the vertical distance between the transporter (and thus the plants) is varied relative to the defoliating apparatus. The transporter and defoliating apparatus may be positioned at an angle to one another. Due to the changing amount of vertical distance, leaves from different sections of the plants, such as leaves at different stalk heights, can be contacted and removed at different corresponding horizontal locations in the machine. Accordingly, leaves can be graded based on the location(s) from which they are retrieved after removal.
