    Abstract: The synchronization system uses a TDMA or AMPS air interface to provide timing synchronization between previously unsynchronized base stations. The synchronization of base stations is critical between when determining the geographical position of a mobile because the geographical position is determined using a time difference of arrival method. In order to synchronize a remote base station with a serving base station, the remote base station receives a signal from the serving base station and measuring the receiving time of the signal at the remote base station in relation to the clock of the remote base station. The synchronization system determines the transmission time of the signal based on the reception time of the signal and the distance between the base stations, in relation to the clock signal of the second station, and synchronizes the clock of the remote base station to the clock of the serving base station based on the offset in the clock cycles at the time the signal was transmitted.

    Abstract: A transmitter directed, distributed receiver using path diversity provided by the distribution of the receiver. Advantage is taken of the uncorrelated variations over time in the condition of channels between a common transmitter and several users. The greater the variation in the channel condition of a particular channel over time, the greater the increase in total system throughput provided. An access metric represents the instantaneous channel condition of the communication system between each user and the transmitter with respect to the average channel condition of each channel. Alternatively, the access metric represent the instantaneous channel condition with respect to the average data throughput over that channel. The common transmitting station uses the access metric to directly compare the desirability of granting each channel access with the desirability of granting each other channel access. The user that has the greatest access metric is provided access to the channel.

In one embodiment the contact information is found in a database (33), while in another embodiment the contact information is created by modifying a telephone number sent with the request (e.g., the called subscriber's normal telephone number) into a second telephone number (e.g. the called subscriber's voice mail number).

    Abstract: A communication device locates a preferable wireless service provider in a multi-service provider environment using a frequency band search schedule. Initially, the communications device registers with a less preferred service provider in a first frequency band. While remaining registered with the less preferred service provider, the device examines several frequency bands in the order specified by the frequency band search schedule. A frequency band is examined by dividing the frequency band into many sub-bands, and by locating the strongest signal above a threshold within the sub-band being examined. The examination continues until a second frequency band having a more preferred service provider is located. The communication device then registers with the more preferred service provider. The category of service provider may be identified and displayed on the communication device.

    Abstract: A method of communicating FSK-modulated Caller ID signals through a network incompatible to the transmission of these signals is presented. A first network component couples between the incompatible network and a Central Office, and a second network component couples between the incompatible network and the telephone. In one embodiment, the call flow proceeds until the second network component would ring the line of the called party. The second network component seizes the line but does not apply a ringing signal. The second network component continues with the call flow as though the second network component had entered the silent interval after the first ring cycle at the called party. Subsequently, the CO transmits the FSK Caller ID information to the first network component which detects the FSK transmission and converts it into an out-of-band message and transmits the out-of-band message over the incompatible network to the second network component.

    Abstract: A telecommunications system and method is disclosed for decreasing the average call setup time in a cellular network by using an Internet Protocol based cellular network. Call information (such as routing information, channel types, etc.) for a particular call initiated by a calling Mobile Station (MS) can be stored in a call cache within a serving Mobile Switching Center (MSC) to immediately allow the same call to be re-established without tying-up circuits. A call cache identifier (CCI) is assigned to that call cache and passed to the calling MS. When the MSC receives a call from the calling MS, the MSC determines whether a CCI is included with the call. If not, call setup proceeds as normal, and the MSC creates a call cache for the call, assigns a CCI to the call cache and returns the CCI to the calling MS. If a CCI is received with the call, the MSC accesses the call cache associated with the received CCI, and uses the call setup information stored in the call cache to re-establish the call.

    Abstract: The invention relates to identifying a TRAU frame in a mobile telephone system. A subscriber terminal normally transmits to a network part a speech frame to be placed in the TRAU frame, and when using discontinuous transmission, the subscriber terminal transmits to the network part a SID frame to be placed in the TRAU frame. A TRAU frame is currently identified in the network part on the basis of the sum of summed up SID code word bits as a speech frame, a SID frame or a SID frame corrupted on the radio path. In accordance with the invention, in addition to the SID code word bits, the other TRAU frame bits that normally contain speech, except for the SID parameter bits representing background noise, are summed up in the sum. Instead of the previously used 95 bits, 210 bits are used. The invention is preferably implemented by software changes in a channel codec.
