  • Patent number: 10067252
Abstract: A method includes using a computing system in generating a land surface or sea floor digital image from post-stack seismic data and determining a clathrate stability zone from the land surface or sea floor digital image. The method also includes generating a laterally extensive subsurface digital image from the seismic data that is within or below the clathrate stability zone and filtering the laterally extensive subsurface digital image to generate a pull-up digital image. The method also includes generating a coarse-grained sediment digital image from the seismic data within the clathrate stability zone. The method also includes spatially superimposing the coarse-grained sediment digital image and the pull-up digital image to generate a combined digital image. The method also includes determining an overlap region from the combined digital image. The overlap region is indicative of a clathrate deposit.

  • Patent number: 10060257
Abstract: Systems and methods of down-hole communication facilitate communication across a mud motor. The systems and methods can employ a hysteresis brake that selectively slows a turbine shaft to thereby produce local pressure pules in a drilling fluid in a predetermined pattern. The hysteresis brake can be operated by providing a relatively small control current to produce a relatively large counter torque, which can be transmitted the turbine shaft. The turbine and the hysteresis brake may be provided below a mud motor, and the local pressure pulses may be transmitted to a receiver disposed above the mud motor while the mud motor is operating. The hysteresis brake can be employed when other communication systems fail, and thus can provide a back-up system to permit a drilling operation to be continued.

  • Patent number: 10047575
Abstract: A gripper for gripping a pipe (P) has gripping bodies holding devices, and dies, the dies being fastened to respective holding devices that are fastened to respective gripping bodies with respective connection arrangements. The connection arrangements can be maneuvered to release the respective holding device for the holding device to assume a service position held by the respective gripping body. A die locking device of a holding device is adapted to be kept, by contact with the respective gripping body, in a locking position when holding device is in the operation position. The locking device can move to an open position when the holding device is moved away from the operation position. The die and a seat in the holding device have a notch and a protrusion, arranged so that, as the pipe contacting element is inserted into the seat in an insertion direction, the protrusion enters, in parallel with the insertion direction, into the notch.

  • Patent number: 10036242
Abstract: Fluid densities can be monitored in real-time in a wellbore, such as during downhole stimulation operations, using an acoustic pressure-sensing system. The measured acoustic signal can be used to determine pressure fluctuations of a fluid in non-laminar flow. An estimated density of the fluid can be calculated based on the pressure fluctuations of the fluid and a known flow rate of the fluid. The flow rate of the fluid can be known, such as when being held constant by surface equipment or when measured at the surface.

  • Patent number: 10036216
Abstract: A self-adjusting spinner is provided that is capable of accommodating various pipe sizes without requiring the need for an operator to climb up the support mechanism and manually change the position of the drive assembly. The self-adjusting spinner includes a case having two pivotally connected members: a stationary case member and a moving case member. Upper and lower plates having gear racks are mounted on the stationary case member for moving a drive assembly horizontally across the case. The drive assembly includes a motor that drives gear sprocket through a drive shaft. The drive sprocket then drives a chain that rotates a drill pipe in an operative position relative to the case. The spinner also includes an adjusting assembly mounted on the case that moves the drive assembly along the gear rack upon the actuation of an adjustment sequence. When the adjustment sequence is initiated, the effective length of the chain is adjusted to accommodate drill pipes of varying diameters.

  • Patent number: 10017999
Abstract: A downhole vibratory tool for placement in drillstrings is disclosed. The downhole vibratory tool creates vibrations in the drillstring while drilling. A rotary drive rotates in response to fluid flow through it, rotating a rotor having a lower end engaging an upper end of a mandrel. The mandrel is held in a main body such that it is rotationally locked with respect to the main body, but can move longitudinally within a restricted range. The lower end of the rotor and the upper end of the mandrel have interfacing surfaces. Rotation of the rotor and interaction of the interfacing surfaces creates a back-and-forth movement of the mandrel with respect to the rest of the tool, creating the desired vibratory motion.
