Abstract: A distributed active knowledge and process base incorporates multiple Distributed Object Technology Systems (DOTS) connected over a network, the Internet, or wireless media to allow multiple types of data, processes, and services (system elements) to be created and modified within the same collaborative framework, and thereby permits data to be appropriately mapped to said processes, provides and updates periodically knowledge about available system elements and their values, allows separate systems to negotiate multiple forms of collaboration, and contains sufficiently flexible levels of data security in order to foster online collaboration.
Abstract: A network management system has a network monitor arranged to monitor the load on elements of a computer network and to reconfigure the network when necessary to optimize its performance. The network configuration is carried out by servers in the network in response to an appropriate instruction from the network monitor. The servers operate to divert traffic from overloaded elements in the network by modifying both source and destination addresses of the transmitted data packets. In this manner the processing or database loads can be spread optimally among a plurality of servers in the network.

Abstract: A point-to-multipoint communications network connecting multiple subscribers to a single communications line. A plurality of subscriber communications interfaces are connected in parallel to form a local group in which one communications interface serves as a master communications interface and the other communications interfaces serve as slaves. Each communications interface may be capable of serving as the master communications interface according to a demand division multiplexing technique, which assigns master status based on upstream data demands. As a communications interface is switched to master status, the communications interface previously holding master status is switched back to slave status. A plurality of communications interfaces can thus be connected to a single communications port without increasing the upstream transmission bandwidth requirements.
Abstract: A method and implementing computer system are provided in which a user is enabled to create a virtual history file by selecting a favorites routing sequence (FRS) or preferred sequence of favorite web sites to be visited during a browser session. During a browser session, the user is enabled to change from one site to the next sequential site on the list using only a single point-and-click operation or keystroke combination within the user's browser program. The user is further enabled to selectively modify the FRS to include new individual or groups of sites and/or delete existing individual or groups of sites from the listing, and also to change the particular order of sites to be visited on the FRS. Further, existing individual or groups of virtual history files may also be embedded into other virtual history files.

Abstract: Multicast packet transferring apparatus and system with a multicast packet transferred from one transferring apparatus existing in one domain to another transferring apparatus existing in another domain, the former transferring apparatus converts the multicast packet fed from a transmitter to a unicast packet and transfers the converted packet to the latter transferring apparatus. The latter transferring apparatus reconstructs the original multicast packet from the received unicast packet and rewrites to replace a transmitter address contained in the reconstructed multicast packet with an address of the transferring apparatus and then transfers the rewritten multicast packet having the rewritten address to specified receivers.
Abstract: A system for reducing data volume transferred over a wireless communications network includes a browser operable to communicate a sequence to a network interface. The system further includes the network interface operable to receive the sequence from the browser, generate a signature for the sequence, store the sequence and signature in memory, associate the sequence and signature with the browser, communicate a cache header and the signature to the browser, and communicate at least one request header to a server. The browser, upon sending a subsequent communication to the server, communicates the cache header and signature to the network interface. In this manner HTTP request headers need not be transferred for every request from the browser.
Abstract: An enhanced backscatter RF-ID tag reader system and multiprotocol RF tag reader system is provided. In a multiprotocol mode, the system emits a non-stationary interrogation signal, and decodes a phase modulated backscatter signal by detecting a stronger phase component from quadrature phase representations or determining phase transition edges in a phase of a received signal. The RF tag reader system predicts or follows the phase of the backscatter signal, thereby avoiding interference from nulls in the received signal waveform due to the non-stationary interrogation signal, relative movement or environmental effects. An acoustic RF-ID tag detection system detects the reradiated signal corresponding to respective transformation of a signal in the tag. Detection of either type of RF-ID tags therefore is possible, and the absence of any tag or absence of any valid tag also determined.
Abstract: A network information management unit in which a memory resource that requires the storage of a network information management database is utilized in distributed fashion, as a result of which a single agent need not be equipped with a large-scale memory. The management unit, which is connected to a network and mounted on a network-capable image processing device capable of being shared by a plurality of clients, is constituted by a plurality of agents distributed on a plurality of logically independent controllers that construct the image processing device. Each of the plurality of agents communicates with one another, and generates a network management information response to a network management information request, which has been issued by a network information manager, after each agent has processed the network management information request in distributed fashion.
