  • Patent number: 5706621
Abstract: The invention relates to a system for laying and mechanically joining building panels, especially thin, hard, floating floors. Adjacent joint edges (3, 4) of two panels (1, 2) engage each other to provide a first mechanical connection locking the joint edges (3, 4) in a first direction (D1) perpendicular to the principal plane of the panels. In each joint, there is further provided a strip (6) which is integrated with one joint edge (3) and which projects behind the other joint edge (4). The strip (6) has an upwardly protruding locking element (8) engaging in a locking groove (14) in the rear side (16) of the other joint edge (4) to form a second mechanical connection locking the panels (1, 2) in a second direction (D2) parallel to the principal plane of the panels and at right angles to the joint. Both the first and the second mechanical connections allow mutual displacement of joined panels (1, 2) in the direction of the joint.

  • Patent number: 5706626
Abstract: An internal shear panel for reducing the tendency of the upper portions of buildings to move relative to the foundation when lateral forces, such as those produced by winds and earthquakes, are applied to the walls. The shear panel is pre-assembled having two vertical posts and two diaphragm members interconnecting the two vertical posts. The panel also has an upper and a lower horizontal member that are connected to the vertical posts and the diaphragm members. The lower horizontal member and the vertical posts are configured to be attached via brackets to holdown bolts mounted in the foundation of a building and the upper horizontal member is configured to be attached to an upper plate or rail of the wall. Hence, the shear panel can be installed by connecting the upper horizontal member to the upper portion of the wall and connecting the lower horizontal member to the holdown bolts in the foundation.

  • Patent number: 5704582
Abstract: A support block for use with other similar support blocks to support a die in an elevated position above a factory floor. Each support block comprises a body having a horizontal top surface for supporting a flange extending laterally outwardly from the bottom of the die. A vertical rod is slidably received in a central bore of the body and has a head on the upper end. The rod is disposed in a notch in the bottom flange of the die and a spring in the body urges the rod down to clamp the flange between the top surface of the body and a washer under the head of the rod. The rod has a spacer between the head and the top surface of the body to maintain a minimum spaced relation between the head of the rod and the top surface of the body. The support block is tethered to an anchor on the die by an elongated flexible linear member which is of sufficient length to enable the support block to be positioned under the die flange with its rod in one of the notches.

  • Patent number: 5694736
Abstract: A method for securing a cladding plate to a building substrate by means of an expandable material, such as a hydrophobic polyurethane foam, which is capable of expanding many times its original volume is disclosed. The hydrophobic polyurethane foam is introduced into a space between the cladding plate and the building substrate so as to create an adhesive bond between adjacent surfaces of the cladding plate and building substrate. The foam is introduced into the space either as a free flowing liquid dispensed into a retention basin created in the space or by means of a balloon from which it will expand freely upon fracturing of the balloon. The balloon is constructed so that it will break shortly after the material has turned into foam but before the material has lost its capability of adhering to the cladding plate and building substrate, and before the balloon pressure can overcome the retaining pressure delivered by the cladding plate and building substrate.

  • Patent number: 5690234
Abstract: A storage unit for storing a bicycle or the like has an overall vertical dimension greater than an overall horizontal dimension, such that the storage unit provides an enclosed area for storing the bicycle in a substantially inclined position. Specifically, the storage unit stands upright or "on end" for storing the bicycle in the inclined position. As such, ground surface area usage is minimized. The storage unit includes an inclined ramp within the enclosed area for providing lift to a wheel of the bicycle as the bicycle is moved into the enclosed area and into the substantially inclined position. A tire-stop cross member is disposed within a lower portion of the enclosed area for providing support to a wheel of the bicycle for retaining the bicycle in the substantially inclined position. The storage unit comprises a plurality of modular panels and may be combined with other storage units such that a common wall is shared between any two adjacently joining storage units.
