  • Patent number: 7700839
Abstract: The present invention relates to improved cultivars, varieties, lines or plants of annual medics (Medicago genus) wherein the majority of seed pods, upon reaching maturity, remain attached to their respective pedicels. In particular, the present invention relates to improved cultivars, varieties, lines or plants of annual medics (Medicago genus), having a mutant form of the gene for pod shedding, thereby resulting in a “pod holding” trait. The invention also extends to methods for isolating such plants. A yet further aspect of the invention relates to a method of transferring the “pod holding” trait from an annual medic having this trait to another annual medic of the genus Medicago by a process of controlled cross-breeding. A still further aspect of the invention relates to a method of obtaining plants having the “pod holding” trait from a population of annual medics of the genus Medicago.

  • Patent number: 7702561
Abstract: A method is provided for identifying a cost-minimizing bid set in a reverse combinatorial auction subject to various business rules for all-or-nothing bundled bids. The method includes introducing a decision variable for each bid, introducing a counting variable to indicate whether bids from a supplier are chosen in an optimal bid set, modeling demand constraints for each item using the bid variables, modeling minimum and maximum numbers of suppliers based on the counting variables, introducing dummy variables to ensure existence of feasible solutions, for a given cost formulating an objective of choosing bids that arrive early based on an additional timestamped objective with the given cost level as a constraint, and introducing price modifications to handle the formulated objective of choosing bids that arrive early.

  • Patent number: 7703079
Abstract: Overall system performance improvements resulting from improvements to individual system components may be predicted by analyzing the effects of artificial performance degradations inserted into the individual components. Measuring and analyzing a negative overall system effect caused by negative changes to an individual component may predict a positive overall system performance improvement resulting from an improvement to the individual component of similar magnitude to the inserted negative changes. System performance prediction may be used to analyze and predict system performance changes related to various computing resources, such as execution time (speed), memory usage, network bandwidth, file I/O, and/or disk storage space, among others.

  • Patent number: 7698980
Abstract: A powered dispenser for dispensing individual sheet segments from a continuous roll of sheet material provided with spaced tear lines comprises a powered feed mechanism, a releasable, powered drive mechanism, a powered transfer mechanism, a pair of web sensing sensors, a capacitive sensing system providing automatic sensitivity adjustment, and control circuitry. A dual power supply system provides a mechanical lock-out functionality, and the control system is protected from electrostatic build-up on the surface of the feed roller. The web sensor, and an antenna plate of the capacitive sensing system, are provided on respective printed circuit boards mounted in overlying relation. Utilizing signals received from the pair of web sensors and the capacitive sensing system, the control circuitry senses the presence of a user to activate the powered drive mechanism, and prevents further dispensing of the sheet material until a previously dispensed segment is separated from the roll.
