  • Publication number: 20140082028
Abstract: A system that implements a scalable data storage service may maintain tables in a non-relational data store on behalf of clients. The system may provide a Web services interface through which service requests are received, and an API usable to request that a table be created, deleted, or described; that an item be stored, retrieved, deleted, or its attributes modified; or that a table be queried (or scanned) with filtered items and/or their attributes returned. An asynchronous workflow may be invoked to create or delete a table. Items stored in tables may be partitioned and indexed using a simple or composite primary key. The system may not impose pre-defined limits on table size, and may employ a flexible schema. The service may provide a best-effort or committed throughput model. The system may automatically scale and/or re-partition tables in response to detecting workload changes, node failures, or other conditions or anomalies.

  • Publication number: 20140061127
Abstract: The invention presents a urea bio-electrochemical (UBE) system to achieve resource recovery from water recycling systems. A GAC-urease bioreactor was used to recover urea from wastewater stream, and converted to ammonia. Then, the ammonia produced was used to feed an electrochemical cell to gather electrical energy. The invention shows the feasibility of using the UBE system in combination with a forward osmosis subsystem for water reclamation.

  • Patent number: 8665025
Abstract: An amplification system is provided that comprises a push-pull amplifier system having a first power transistor series coupled with a second power transistor that alternately switch between a push-pull amplifier mode of operation and a single-ended amplifier mode of operation. In the push-pull amplifier mode, both the first power transistor and the second power transistor alternately conduct to provide an amplified output signal to an output load in response to an input signal having an amplitude that is greater than or equal to a threshold level. In the single-ended amplifier mode of operation, the first power transistor conducts and the second power transistor is disabled for amplification purposes in response to the input signal having an amplitude that is less than the threshold level.

  • Patent number: 8664385
Abstract: A family of three 8-alkyl boron dipyrromethenes 1, 2, and 3 has been prepared. These compounds are characterized by emission in the green region of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum and exhibit an almost double laser efficiency than other commercial dyes and much greater photostability. The 8-alkyl boron dipyrromethenes are prepared by catalytic hydrogenation (reduction) of the corresponding 8-alkenyl boron dipyrromethenes, which are obtained by Liebeskind-Srogl coupling of thiomethylboron dipyrromethene with an alkenyl boronic acid.

  • Patent number: 8652151
Abstract: A right angle clip applier apparatus including a distal clip applying mechanism and a proximal advancing mechanism positioned in a handle assembly. The clip applying mechanism includes a feed rod interfacing with a cartridge for the advancing and applying of clips on tissue portions. A plurality of clips are enclosed in the apparatus. The advancing mechanism is actuated by a lever in the handle assembly which creates a drive force that repositions the feed rod and clips. Each actuation of the lever applies a first clip and advances clips to a new position in a distal direction. The clip applying mechanism can be utilized at any angle and can be rotated through 360 degrees while holding the handle in a fixed position. An empty clip indicator is provided.

  • Patent number: 8636752
Abstract: An endoscopic stitching device including a tool assembly having a pair of juxtaposed jaws; a rotatably supported camming hub defining a groove formed in an inner surface of a central lumen thereof; and a center rod slidably and rotatably disposed within the lumen of the camming hub. The center rod is operatively engaged with the groove formed in the camming hub and engaged with the pair of jaws. The inner groove of the camming hub is configured such that, in at least one position, axial translation of the center rod relative to the camming hub results in rotation of the camming hub and at least one of opening and closing of the pair of jaws. The inner groove of the camming hub is configured such that, in at least one other position, rotation of the canter rod results in rotation of the tool assembly.

  • Publication number: 20140021056
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for balancing a rotor, notably of a turbomachine, comprising a step of determining the unbalancing mass followed by a step of balancing by chemical machining of the rotor. More particularly, the chemical machining comprises the immersion of the rotor in a bath containing a chemical machining agent, the bath having a capacity of heterogeneous material removal (as a function of the depth of the bath), the rotor being oriented in the bath taking account of the said capacity of heterogeneous material removal so that the quantity of material removed from the rotor in the zone of the unbalancing mass is sufficient to balance the rotor.

  • Patent number: 8628372
Abstract: An actuator assembly including a resilient substrate having one or more shape memory alloys secured to the substrate. The shape memory alloys are configured to move a portion or all of the actuator assembly between an at-rest configuration and an actuated configuration. The shape memory alloys are elastically bendable and can be contracted from an elongated length to a contracted length in response to transmission of an electrical current therethrough. The electrical current is of a magnitude sufficient to heat the shape memory alloys from a first temperature to a second temperature so that a portion of or the entire actuator assembly can move from the at-rest configuration to the actuated configuration. Termination or reduction of the electrical current allows the shape memory alloy to cool and thereby elongate from the contracted length to the elongated length.

  • Publication number: 20140007821
Abstract: A rapid recovery tankless water heater operates by means of an electronic controller or card that regulates the operation of each of the system components, thereby optimizing gas consumption and minimizing the emission of gas pollutants. A multi-burner only ignites when certain conditions or predefined requirements in the electronic controller logic are met. Other factors contributing to improved water heater efficiency are: a) the water tank design which at the bottom has a water chamber surrounding the combustion chamber, and b) the use of a finned heat exchanger, which together with a core, successfully utilizes most of the thermal energy contained in the combustion gases. An air deflector device stops the entry of air currents at the top of the heater, thus stopping potential flame reversing and even flame extinction in the multi-burner.

  • Patent number: 8626827
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for programmatically simulating one or more system conditions for a network resource using one or more services. In one implementation, a server receives a request to initiate a treatment. The request identifies a treatment definition. The server determines, based on the treatment definition, the one or more services and deploys the one or more services to the network resource. The one or more services simulate the one or more system conditions.
