Patent number: 9879487Abstract: Example embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to measurement and control systems and methods of improved spooling accuracy. Specifically, the systems and method disclosed herein provide techniques for accurately monitoring the depth of a sandline in a wellbore through sensing spool rotation, and controlling certain aspects of the spooling and/or producing certain notifications when the depth is above or below a certain threshold. Thus, the spool can be operated with increased diligence when it gets close to the wellhead. In certain example embodiments, the depth of the sandline is measured based at least partially on the number of spool rotations, compensating for decreasing length of sandline per layer of sandline on the spool.Type: GrantFiled: February 4, 2014Date of Patent: January 30, 2018Assignee: KEY ENERGY SERVICES, LLCInventors: Brandon S. Bell, David E. Lord, Rodney W. Hollums, Roger P. Burke

Patent number: 9020014Abstract: A cable modem termination system (CMTS) is disclosed that allocates one or more minislots of a super-frame arrangement to cable modems for upstream transmission. The super-frame arrangement includes multiple minislots that correspond to multiple communication channels of one or more super-frames. The CMTS receives requests for upstream bandwidth from the cable modems. The CMTS continuously allocates the minislots of the super-frame to provide upstream bandwidth grants to accommodate these requests. The CMTS communicates the upstream bandwidth grants as a single upstream bandwidth allocation map (MAP) to the cable modems.Type: GrantFiled: December 30, 2011Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Niki Pantelias, Scott Hollums

Patent number: 8908716Abstract: A method for increasing upstream bandwidth per cable modem user in a cable communications system that includes a cable modem termination system (CMTS) and a plurality of cable modems is provided. The method permits a cable modem to transmit data to the CMTS on multiple upstream channels simultaneously using a technique called “channel bonding.” Channel bonding allows smaller bandwidth upstream channels to be bonded together to create a larger bandwidth pipe.Type: GrantFiled: September 14, 2012Date of Patent: December 9, 2014Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Lisa Voigt Denney, Niki Roberta Pantelias, A. Scott Hollums, Victor T. Hou, John Daniel Horton, Jr., David Michael Pullen

Patent number: 8705567Abstract: A method for increasing upstream bandwidth per cable modem user in a cable communications system that includes a cable modem termination system (CMTS) and a plurality of cable modems is provided. The method permits a cable modem to transmit data to the CMTS on multiple upstream channels simultaneously using a technique called “channel bonding.” Bandwidth allocation is achieved by transmitting from a CMTS to a cable modem a unique bandwidth allocation message for each upstream channel in a bonded group of upstream channels, wherein the combination of unique bandwidth allocation messages collectively allocates requested bandwidth across the bonded group.Type: GrantFiled: March 21, 2006Date of Patent: April 22, 2014Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Lisa Voigt Denney, Niki Roberta Pantelias, A. Patent number: 8537696Abstract: A system and method are presented for changing physical layer (PHY) parameters in a PHY device of a communications system. New parameters are written to a first-in first-out queue in a serial interface, while the scheduled time for the changeover is written to a control register in the serial interface. When the time for the changeover occurs, the parameters are written to the PHY device via a port of the serial interface.Type: GrantFiled: October 3, 2007Date of Patent: September 17, 2013Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: A. Scott Hollums, Niki R. Pantelias, David A. Ferguson

Patent number: 7958431Abstract: A system and method is provided for interleaving data in a communication device. The system includes a memory that stores blocks of data to be interleaved. In addition to the memory, the system includes a write module and a read module, each of which is coupled to the memory. The write module is configured to receive a burst of data and write blocks of data from the burst into the memory. The write module is also configured to provide control information to the read logic. The control information includes a rolling burst counter and a burst profile bank identifier for each block. If interleaving is activated, the control information also includes information pertaining to how the read module should interleave the block. If interleaving is not activated, the control information also includes the byte length size of the burst. The read module reads blocks of data from memory in either an interleaved fashion or a non-interleaved fashion in accordance with the control information.Type: GrantFiled: December 12, 2007Date of Patent: June 7, 2011Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventor: Scott Hollums
