  • Patent number: 4013170
Abstract: A shipping container of molded plastic in whose cavity a load is suspended between sets of three rubber straps diverging from the load toward respective rigid base members on the shell in angularly offset planes, the central strap of each set being less resilient than the two other straps. The straps impede transmission of mechanical shock from the shell to load, and their different resiliencies prevent build-up of load oscillations. The shell protects the load against harmful effects of the atmosphere.

  • Patent number: 4014042
Abstract: A magnetic tape cassette comprises a housing open on one side and, movable therein, a sheath enclosing a magnetic tape roll. Detachable retaining means in the cassette hold the sheath and the roll in position while the cassette is not on the recorder. The retaining means are detachable by unlatching means when the cassette is fitted to the recorder, so that, following a movement of the sheath, the cassette is opened to allow the roll to emerge at least partially from the cassette and the circumference of the roll to be rotated by means of a recorder-associated capstan provided outside the cassette. Further advantageous embodiments of the invention concern the cassette and the recorder. The cassette of the invention and the recorder associated therewith can be employed in all fields of magnetic tape recording and reproduction. Its application to a magnetic tape system with a self-threading tape end entails advantages.

  • Patent number: 4013058
Abstract: To connect two machine elements which are dynamically loaded by means of tension bolts, the bolts are carried through bores in the machine elements which are somewhat wider than the diameter of the bolts to form a cylindrical chamber, leaving a cylindrical gap surrounding the bolt; the chamber is entirely filled with a damping substance, such as a foamed material, or lubricating oil, particularly pressurized lubricating oil or the like. Preferably, the gap is about 2 to 8 percent of the diameter of the tension bolt, has a length at least three times the diameter of the tension bolt, and is located approximately centered between the points of force application on the tension bolt, to dampen transfer of vibrations, but permit slow bending, below the yield point of the bolt, within the chamber.

  • Patent number: 4013554
Abstract: Contaminated water is pumped through the anode compartment of an electrolytic cell which is separated from the cathode compartment by a diaphragm permeable to water and to inorganic ions. Particles of hydrophilic, electrically conductive, carbonaceous material capable of adsorbing the contaminants are retained in the anode compartment by the diaphragm and by screens in the water discharge conduit and are held in turbulent suspension by the flowing water so that they make intermittent conductive contact with the anode surface.

  • Patent number: 4012938
Abstract: A device for manipulating a hot blank relative to a forging tool in a drop hammer comprises a plurality of gripping jaws carried by a unit connected to a rotatable tongs arm, said jaws being pivotably mounted for selective movement through a limited arc toward and away from one another, and each of said jaws including a gripping claw adapted to be longitudinally displaced relative to its associated jaw. Movement of the tongs arm and associated movement of the gripping jaws and their respective gripping claws is employed to selectively position the several claws within cup-shaped recesses formed in the forging tool at positions underlying the flash of a hot blank in the tool. The unit further includes counter-holders which are positioned to overlie the forging tool in spaced relation to said flash whereby the simultaneous coaction between the gripping claws and blank and between the counter-holders and forging tool operate to break a forged blank loose from said tool.

  • Patent number: 4012573
Abstract: An improved method of removing heat from polymerization reactions of normally gaseous monomers in the gas phase comprising feeding the monomer in liquid form to a polymerization zone, immediately after entering said zone, removing a portion of said gaseous monomer from the polymerization zone, liquefying said portion of monomer by cooling it at the same pressure as that prevailing in the polymerization zone, recycling the liquefied monomer to the polymerization zone together with fresh monomer in liquid form and causing said liquid monomer to change to the gaseous form immediately after entering said zone. The improvement consists in not only condensing the monomer outside the polymerization zone but also storing the same, in keeping the temperature in the polymerization zone constant by regulating the rate at which liquid monomer is fed to the zone, and in keeping the temperature and pressure in the polymerization zone within limits conducive to the gaseous state of the monomer.

  • Patent number: 4011978
Abstract: High production rates and decreased wear and tear and stress on parts are obtained in a bag fabrication machine with the web fed intermittently by respective bag lengths, for operations such as perforating, transverse severing or welding with the web halted.A sector plate is oscillated between two extreme positions faster in one direction than in the other by a flywheel-carried crank pin orbiting about an axis eccentric from the plate axis; the pin engaging a block sliding in the plate radially of its axis. The plate motion is applied as input to an electrically operated clutch and brake unit and the output is applied to web advance rolls. Switches on the slide block, actuated at the extreme sector positions, control the alternating clutch and brake engagement to drive the rolls for web feed during the slower sector motion of relatively longer duration; and also declutching with braking to halt the web precisely, for and during a faster sector plate return motion.
