  • Patent number: 4023556
Abstract: Flat plate absorber member includes a flat heat absorbing sheet of a thin metal foil such as copper, or a thin plastic film such as polyvinyl fluoride, bonded to a channeled substrate, and particularly to a plastic laminate such as a glass epoxy laminate. The improved absorber member provides an energy collecting efficiency which is much greater than that of a much more expensive conventional collector having a series of copper tubes soldered to a copper sheet. The absorber is preferably made by the method of taking a base sheet of fully cured glass epoxy laminate and overlaying it with a precut, patterned intermediate layer of semi-cured glass expoxy which defines the depth of the side walls of the channels. The cover sheet of metal foil or plastic film is then placed over the semi-cured glass epoxy intermediate layer and heat and pressure are applied to bond the semi-cured glass epoxy to the cover sheet and to the previously cured base sheet.

  • Patent number: 4018992
Abstract: Quadraphonically encoded left end right signals are fed to separate left and right signal phase shifters the outputs of which are fed to three variable gain amplifiers for each of the four corner loudspeakers of a quadraphonic playback system and also to three comparators which function to control operation of the variable gain amplifiers in such manner as to cancel cross talk by altering the decoding coefficients of the cross talk bearing channels.

  • Patent number: 4015325
Abstract: A method and apparatus for assembling an apertured insert onto a rim extending from the end of a metal container and surrounding an opening therein is disclosed herein. The method contemplates inserting an expandable support member through the aperture in the insert and moving the member into engagement with the inner surface of the end of the container surrounding the opening. The insert is then forced onto the rim of the container while the end panel is supported by the support member. The apparatus consists of a first member for gripping the insert and a second member adapted to pass through the aperture in the insert with expandable means on the second member for extending beyond the periphery of the opening in the container end wall. The apparatus also incorporates drive means for moving the members and the expansible means in synchronized relation to each other.

  • Patent number: 4015968
Abstract: An apparatus for supporting and conveying glass sheets on a series of conveyor rolls having arcuately curved central portions normally disposed in an upper common horizontal plane for supporting a flat sheet of heat-softened glass to be bent and pivotable into a lower angular position out of engagement with said flat sheet upon engagement thereof along its marginal edge portions by the shaping rail of an upwardly movable female press member. Each conveyor roll is provided with a two-piece coupling comprised of a first section secured to the conveyor roll and a second section operatively connected to a drive arrangement. The sections are angularly rotated relative to each other to effect precise angular adjustments therebetween for varying the angular attitude of the associated conveyor roll in its lower position of use.

  • Patent number: 4016218
Abstract: Process for the alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons by contacting same with an olefin alkylating agent in a reaction zone maintained under conditions such that said alkylation is accomplished in the presence of a catalyst comprising a crystalline aluminosilicate zeolite, said zeolite having a silica to alumina ratio of at least about 12 and a constraint index, as hereinafter defined, within the approximate range of 1 to 12, said catalyst having been modified by prior thermal treatment to reduce the activity thereof, as determined by an alpha value, as described herein, to less than about 250 and preferably within the range of less than about 200 but greater than 10.

  • Patent number: 4013873
Abstract: An electrical heating farrowing pad of rigid plastic walls is adapted with shielding for either overhead supported outlets or side supported outlets along the floor of the farrowing pen. The shielding includes a tubular elbow fitting having one arm securely fixed between the rigid plastic walls of the farrowing pad, the elongated electric cord extending through the fitting. The electric cord is passed through an elongated tubular connector until the male plug extends from one end of said connector. The opposite end is aligned with the vertical arm of the elbow fitting and coupled to said arm to shield the cord for an overhead outlet. Alternatively, the horizontal arm of the elbow fitting is cut along a bias and a complementary bias cut is formed on the end of the tubular connector so that the shielding extends along the floor for connection to a side supported outlet.

  • Patent number: 4012290
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring trace amounts of lead alkyls in gasoline wherein a small sample of the gasline is injected into a vaporizer, with a carrier gas transporting the sample through the vaporizer to a filter that separates the interfering olefins and aromatic components from the lead alkyls in the sample. The discharge from the filter is supplied to an electrochemical cell of a type known as a galvanic sensor whose output signal is integrated or otherwise utilized to obtain a measurement of the quantity of lead alkyls in the sample.

  • Patent number: 4010066
Abstract: A method for improving heat economy in the batchwise digestion of lignocellulosic material especially when using a batch digester with a digestion or cooking liquor in which the digestion or cooking chemicals are dissolved, such as in sulphate, sulphite, bisulphite, oxygen, peroxide and ammonium hydroxide digestion processes, and also in the manufacture of high yield semichemical pulps.A superatmospheric gas pressure is applied above the level of the liquor in a batch digester; the level of the digester liquor is determined after the liquor has been absorbed by a batch lignocellulosic material; the level of free digestion liquor is then adjusted to that level providing an amount including the absorbed liquor to digest the lignocellulosic material; and then the material is digested under the superatmospheric pressure to form cellulose pulp.

  • Patent number: 4008875
Abstract: A fluid control valve which operates accurately in response to the pressure difference that exists between a pair of ports in the valve. The valve features a spool which is normally biased to one control position wherein it remains with the sensed pressure difference being below one preselected amount. The spool shifts rapidly to another control position on the sensed pressure difference exceeding this amount. In this other control position, the spool remains until the sensed pressure difference drops to another preselected amount which is significantly lower than the first-mentioned preselected amount. On this latter event occurring, the spool returns to its first-mentioned control position.
