  • Publication number: 20170283022
Abstract: A portable sail for use with a paddle and paddle board, where one edge of the sail has a fastening portion that is reversibly affixed along the length of the paddle, while the opposite end of the sail is held by the user via a cord or handle. With paddle held upright on the surface of the paddle board with one hand, and controlling the end of the sail with the other hand, a user can capture the wind and propel the paddle board through the water. The rate of propulsion can be adjusted by partially wrapping the sail around the paddle to reduce the sail area exposed to the wind. Furthermore, the sail can be entirely wrapped around the paddle so the paddle can be used to manually propel the paddle board in the traditional manner.

  • Publication number: 20160306531
Abstract: Window-invoking functionality is described herein for leveraging context information to present a graphical control element (e.g., a window) of an application in a manner that most likely corresponds to the underlying intent of a user. By doing so, the window-invoking functionality improves the efficiency of the user in interacting with the application, and also reduces consumption of computing resources. In one implementation, the window-invoking functionality includes an information gathering component for collecting the context information, and an invocation component for selecting a particular virtual desktop on which to present the graphical control element, based on the context information.

  • Publication number: 20160085388
Abstract: Desktop environment differentiation in virtual desktop techniques are described. In one or more implementations, a user is logged into a corresponding single user account of an operating system of a computing device. Functionality accessible via the single user account is exposed to implement a plurality of virtual desktops associated with the single user account. • Publication number: 20160077685
Abstract: Operating system virtual desktop techniques are described. In one or more implementations, a plurality of virtual desktops are implemented by a single operating system of a computing device. Each of the virtual desktops includes a user interface that is configured to have an associated collection of windows that correspond to applications. Access to the plurality of virtual desktops is managed by the operating system that is navigable by a user to interact with associated collection of representations of application and windows corresponding to the applications by switching between the plurality of virtual desktops.

  • Patent number: 9234770
Abstract: A device for sensing a phenomenon using a dynamic measurement range includes: a sensing element configured to measure the phenomenon using a first measurement range and to provide an analog indication of a value of the phenomenon; an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) coupled to the sensing element and configured to convert the analog indication to a digital indication; and a processor coupled to the ADC and the sensing element and configured to analyze the digital indication to determine a second measurement range for the sensing element and to cause the sensing element to change from the first measurement range to the second measurement range for measurement of the phenomenon, the first measurement range being different than the second measurement range.

  • Patent number: 9128605
Abstract: This document describes techniques and apparatuses enabling thumbnail-image selection of applications. In some embodiments, these techniques and apparatuses enable a user interface having selectable thumbnail images for applications not currently exposed on a display. The techniques and apparatuses may enable selection of this user interface through a simple gesture that is both easy-to-use and remember. Further, selection of applications not currently exposed on the display may be selected through thumbnail images representing each application's application interface as it will appear on selection.

  • Patent number: 8843181
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are directed to mobile devices utilizing motion and/or position sensors for improving operating performance and/or power efficiency. In one example, a method for reducing power consumption in a mobile device includes receiving movement information, establishing movement data based on the movement information, determining if the mobile device is stationary using the movement data; and reducing the frequency of searching for a base station when the mobile device is stationary. In another example, a mobile device which reduces power consumption based upon movement data includes an RF front end, a receiver coupled to the RF front end, a data demodulator coupled to the receiver, a searcher, coupled to the RF front end and the receiver, which searches for base stations, and a processing unit coupled to the searcher, wherein the processing unit controls the searcher based upon the stationarity of the mobile device.

  • Patent number: 8436773
Abstract: A method for enhanced location determination using temporal, spatial and/or frequency diversity. Multiple ranging signal measurements are obtained from each signal source using either temporal, spatial and/or frequency diversity. In one embodiment, the multiple ranging signal measurements are combined using a metric to obtain a single ranging signal measurement. The location determination solution is then calculated using the single ranging signal measurement. In a second embodiment, a location determination solution is calculated for each of the multiple ranging signal measurements to result in multiple location determination solutions. A metric is then used to combine the multiple location determination solutions to result in a single location determination solution.

  • Patent number: 8391345
Abstract: Wireless devices and techniques providing improved system acquisition in an environment of multiple co-existing technologies over a common frequency band are disclosed. In one aspect, at a remote terminal, a power spectral distribution (PSD) of received signals is sequentially measured in contiguous segments of a frequency band of interest. One or more characteristics of the measured PSD is compared to at least one predetermined metric to identify the presence or absence of at least one technology type of the received signals in frequency locations across the band. A system acquisition operation is performed in accordance with the identification, such as a tailored scan of channels at locations where a desired technology is identified.
