  • Publication number: 20040009489
Abstract: The invention provides a molecular taxonomy of lung carcinoma, the leading cause of cancer death in the United States and worldwide. Oligonucleotide microarrays were used to analyze mRNA expression levels corresponding to 12,600 transcript sequences in 186 lung tumor samples, including 139 adenocarcinomas resected from the lung. Hierarchical and probabilistic clustering of expression data defined distinct subclasses of lung adenocarcinoma. Among these were tumors with high relative expression of neuroendocrine genes and of type II pneumocyte genes, respectively. Retrospective analysis revealed a less favorable outcome for the adenocarcinomas with neuroendocrine gene expression. The diagnostic potential of expression profiling is emphasized by its ability to discriminate primary lung adenocarcinomas from metastases of extrapulmonary origin. These results suggest that integration of expression profile data with clinical parameters could aid in diagnosis of lung cancer patients.

  • Publication number: 20040010481
Abstract: A neural network system and method for analyzing data sets, especially microarray gene expression data. The neural network is trained to generate time-dependent outcome predictions based on input features and outcome functions for a number of subjects. The features may be highly dimensional relative to the number of subjects, and feature selection is applied to the input feature data for training the neural network. A trained neural network processes input features from a subject to generate an outcome function that reflects the probability of the occurrence of an event at a given time point for that subject.

  • Patent number: 6675845
Abstract: A method and package for controlled metered dispensing of a fluid product contained in the package having a metered dispensing system, each time the package is opened or uncapped are disclosed. By the present method and package, the maximum amount of product that can be dispensed is limited to a single metered dose after each uncapping of the package. Specifically, the metered dispensing system is configured to allow dispensing of only a single metered dose of a liquid, viscous liquid, gel, paste, or semi-solid product contained in the package and to prevent further dispensing of additional doses of product until at least one specific and deliberate step is taken that re-activates or re-engages the dispensing system. Such deliberate step is preferably one that occurs through natural use of the package, such as re-capping the open package after one single dose has been dispensed. Only after the open package has been re-capped can the next dose of product be available for dispensing.

  • Patent number: 6676182
Abstract: A device extends the storage bed of a vehicle and creates a storage receptacle at multiple locations on top of the storage bed. Adjustable length side walls are pivotally attached to an end wall to form an open top box. Two walls pivotally attached to each other and to the end wall allow formation of a storage receptacle when desired. The adjustability of the side walls permits the open top box, whether it is used to extend the storage bed, create a storage receptacle on top of the storage bed or both, to make optimal use of the storage space between the wheel wells of the vehicle and its raised tailgate, as well as to make optimal use of the additional storage bed space created by lowering the tailgate. Storage receptacles created by the open top box may be subdivided into multiple smaller storage receptacles.

  • Patent number: 6675991
Abstract: A ram plate which allows easy lifting and dropping of the plate even when a complete seal has been made with high-viscosity liquids inside a barrel. The system contains two alternative methods of depressurizing the internal liquids in order to more efficiently avoid vacuum and suction effect when the user attempts to raise the plate. The bleed stick components of the plate are completely independent of vent ports components. Such bleed stick components are levers which, when depressed, will move a cover and expose the internal liquids to outside air pressure via air vents. The vent port components operate through both gravity and potential energy of an internal spring, which place a given amount of downward pressure on a pneumatic cylinder which may or may not be enough pressure to move the cylinder and expose a vent to the outside atmosphere pressure.
