  • Patent number: 8892745
Abstract: A method is provided in one example embodiment and includes identifying a first data center configured to receive a request initiated by an end user. The method also includes detecting a presence of a wide area application service (WAAS) and identifying a second data center. The method further includes signaling, in response to the presence of the WAAS, to redirect data packets associated with the request to the second data center. In more specific embodiments, the signaling includes adding a TCP option to packets of a session associated with the end user to inform components of redirecting capabilities of a WAAS element. The detecting can include recognizing a transmission control protocol (TCP) option in detecting the presence of the WAAS. The TCP option can be used to identify capabilities of a WAAS element that is involved in servicing the request of the end user.

  • Patent number: 8724487
Abstract: A method is provided in one example embodiment and includes receiving a plurality of packets and generating a data record that is based on information associated with the packets. The data record includes a synchronized time window field that defines a time boundary at which data aggregation associated with the data record is stopped, where the synchronized time window field remains constant as the data aggregation associated with the data record occurs. In other embodiments, the method includes creating a new cache entry for new packets arriving at a network element, where the new cache entry is created in response to a value of the synchronized time window field changing. The synchronized time window field can include a window size attribute that defines how long the synchronized time window remains unchanged.

  • Publication number: 20080298592
Abstract: In one embodiment, a technique for updating an address associated with a first entity in a communications network with a second entity in the communications network wherein the address is used to forward information to the first entity from the second entity. The first entity registers a first address associated with the first entity with the second entity. The first entity determines that a second address associated with the first entity is to be used instead of the first address to communicate with the first entity. The first entity generates an update message containing the second address, the update message obviating having to register the second address with the second entity. The first entity forwards the update message to the second entity to cause the second entity to use the second address instead of the first address to forward information to the first entity.
