Patent number: 9587565Abstract: A butterfly valve includes a body with a bore through which exhaust gas may flow and a valve member rotatably mounted within the bore for restricting flow through the bore. A stop extends into the bore to limit movement of the valve member and prevent the valve member from rotating to a closed position. The stop defines a restricted flow position at which the valve member is positioned between an open position and the closed position. An internal combustion engine utilizing the butterfly valve is also provided.Type: GrantFiled: June 17, 2011Date of Patent: March 7, 2017Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Daniel Streutker, Aaron C. Luft

Publication number: 20160363094Abstract: A spark plug assembly is disclosed for use with an engine having a cylinder head at feast partially defining a combustion chamber. The spark plug assembly may have a spark plug at least partially disposed in the cylinder head and configured to generate a spark Inside the combustion chamber to ignite an air and fuel mixture. The spark plug assembly may also have an insert configured to receive the spark plug and at least partially form a cooling passage surrounding the spark plug.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 15, 2015Publication date: December 15, 2016Applicant: CATERPILLAR INC.Inventors: Aaron C. LUFT, James CRESS, Jeff Allen Howard, Joshua Andrew HYDE, Parthipan SUBRAMANIAN

Patent number: 9222429Abstract: A control system for a gaseous-fueled engine is disclosed. The gaseous-fueled engine may have an intake valve mechanically driven by a camshaft. The control system may have a variable valve timing device configured to adjust a cyclical opening and closing timing of the intake valve. The control system may further have a sensor configured to generate a signal indicative of a speed of the engine and a controller in communication with the variable valve timing device and the sensor. In addition, the controller may be configured to selectively initiate a first Miller Cycle timing and a second Miller Cycle timing based on the signal.Type: GrantFiled: February 14, 2013Date of Patent: December 29, 2015Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Aaron C. Luft, Darryl D. Baldwin, Rohit Menon, Jordan P. Gilsinger

Patent number: 9032937Abstract: A fuel air mixer includes a fuel air mixing tube having an inlet, an outlet, and an inlet inner diameter. A collar is attached at the mixing tube inlet and includes a first cylindrical portion upstream of the mixing tube inlet, and a body portion encircling the mixing tube at the mixing tube inlet and forming a fuel reservoir around the mixing tube inlet. The first cylindrical portion is spaced from the mixing tube inlet to create a gap placing the fuel reservoir in fluid communication with the mixing tube inlet. The first cylindrical portion has an inner diameter that is smaller than the inlet inner diameter so air flowing through the first cylindrical portion and into the mixing tube inlet draws gaseous fuel from the fuel reservoir into the mixing tube through the gap.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 2013Date of Patent: May 19, 2015Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Aaron C. Luft, Jordan P. Gilsinger

Patent number: 7926470Abstract: A relief valve is provided for use with a fuel system. The relief valve may have a housing forming an inlet, an outlet, and a central bore fluidly connecting the inlet to the outlet. The relief valve may also have a valve element disposed within the central bore of the housing and being configured to move between a flow-passing position and a flow-blocking position. The valve element may have a passageway continuously communicating the inlet of the housing with the outlet of the housing. The relief valve may also have a resilient member situated to bias the valve element toward the flow-blocking position.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2009Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: Caterpillar Inc.Inventors: Donald J. Lockridge, Aaron C. Luft
