  • Patent number: 5678356
Abstract: There is provided a container or tray for growing, planting and transplanting plant, having a plurality of growing compartments arranged in adjacent rows. Each growing compartment is formed by four walls. An air opening is located adjacent to each wall of each growing compartment. The walls of the growing compartments are offset at a non-right angle with respect to the major axis of the tray. Air slits are formed in the walls of the growing compartments. The bottoms of the growing compartments have openings, each with a pair of ledges adjacent thereto so that the root ball of the plants may be aerated while holding the plants within the growing compartment. The center-to-center spacing between adjacent growing compartments is the same throughout the tray.

  • Patent number: 4926587
Abstract: A method and apparatus for propagating plants is illustrated wherein provision is made for aeration and drainage of the root plug with increased air flow to the upper or leafy parts of the plants extending across a growing tray in a predetermined pattern. Provision is also made for filling the compartments of a growing tray with growing medium in a predetermined pattern to permit air flow across the tray from the bottom. Provision is also made to support strips forming a growing tray permitting horizontal movement of the strips as well as rows of compartments containing the plants, and a shelf is provided in the strips or partitions of the trays extending for a limited distance over a minor area of the compartments to confine the growing medium within the trays while permitting insertion of a member for pushing the plant upwardly from the bottom out of the respective growing containers.

  • Patent number: 4777764
Abstract: A seedling container is illustrated wherein a number of removable partitions or barriers are clamped together in a block by releasable clamping means permitting alignment of the partitions and then sequential removal in such a way as to support the removed partitions while removing the seedlings one row at a time. Additional stability and alignment is provided through the use of projections and slots as well as additional clamping means. Air pruning is provided, and through the use of a converging bottom in alternate compartments occupied by seedling plugs, loss of growing medium is avoided.

  • Patent number: 4771912
Abstract: There is provided an improved cassette particularly adapted for sowing seeds utilizing a plurality of adjacent stacked plates having a plurality of perforations therein. The perforations are adapted to receive seeds. The seeds in the perforations of each plate are held in place by portions of a lower adjacent plate. Adjacent plates are adapted to be moved relative to one another for a short distance for aligning the perforations thus permitting the seeds from an upper plate to pass through the perforations in the plates below it for planting.

  • Patent number: 4453344
Abstract: A seedling growing container is illustrated wherein a number of removable partitions or barriers are positioned together in a block. Each of the partitions has interconnected diverging walls forming a series of troughs therebetween open at the top and the bottom so that the partitions may be placed in opposing relation as in a tray forming growing compartments from each of the opposing troughs which are in register with each other, suitable for growing a single seedling. Positioning of the plugs is contemplated such that alternate rows of plugs of growing material, each of which is capable of growing a single seedling, are utilized so that each plug will be surrounded for the most part by a partition with the remainder being surrounded by an air space for preventing roots from growing from one plug to the other through the process of air pruning.

  • Patent number: 4173101
Abstract: A greenhouse gutter assembly is illustrated wherein an extruded channel member has integral upper and lower sides projecting from the ends of a horizontal drainage member and an insulating bottom is spaced below the drainage bottom creating an air space extending below and across the drainage bottom. Means are also provided creating an insulating air space across the upper sides which facilitates attachment of the bow members of the roof as well as providing insulation for the greenhouse.

  • Patent number: 4050188
Abstract: A seedling growing container such as a tray, is illustrated providing a drainage channel opening in a side of the bottom of respective compartments to permit side removal of the seedling and the entire root system including any portion of the root system which may have grown through the drainage opening. Since the drainage channel opens at an open side of the compartments there is no obstruction to the removal of any roots which may have grown through and around the drainage passageway.
