    Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of diabetes. More specifically, the present invention provides compositions and methods useful for diagnosing and treating Type I diabetes. In one embodiment, a method comprises detecting a nucleotide sequence encoding SEQ ID NO:1 from a biological sample obtained from a patient. In another embodiment, the present invention provides an antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof that specifically binds SEQ ID NO:1. In a further embodiment, the present invention provides an antibody or antigen-binding fragment thereof that specifically binds (i) a B-cell receptor expressed on a lymphocyte, wherein the B-cell receptor comprises SEQ ID NO:1; or (ii) a free-floating antibody comprising SEQ ID NO:1.

In one embodiment, the present invention provides a knockout animal whose genome comprises a deletion of exon 2 and exon 3 of kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (KEAP1) in T-cells. In another embodiment, a method for treating a subject diagnosed with AKI comprising the steps of (a) isolating T-cells from the subject; (b) activating Nrf2 expression in the isolated T-cells; and (c) administering the T-cells back to the subject.
