  • Patent number: 5180469
Abstract: A single crystal of semiconductor silicon can be sliced into wafers not by the conventional mechanical means but by a novel chemical means so that advantages are obtained in the reduced material loss by cutting and in the absence of any mechanically stressed layer in the surface of the wafer as sliced. The method comprises conducting electrolysis of an aqueous solution containing sulfuric and hydrofluoric acids with a fine platinum wire as the anode to evolve oxygen containing ozone on the anode surface while a single crystal of silicion is held in proximity to the wire anode so that the nascent oxygen formed from the ozone oxidizes silicon into silicon dioxide which as formed is dissolved away in the acidic medium to leave a groove in the single crystal. When the wire anode or the single crystal is continuously moved to keep a small distance between the wire anode and the groove bottom, the whole single crystal body is cut through to form a wafer.

  • Patent number: 5179760
Abstract: An apparatus for changing the wiping range of a wiper enables the wiping range to be changed easily but without involving the risk of unwanted changes. The motor caused movement of the drive link is converted into a movement of the drive link for causing a reciprocating oscillation of wiper arms by first and second links which are each swingably supported, the second link being swingable realtive to the first link in such a manner that the stop position of the wiper arms can be varied. An auxiliary link provided on the first link is swingable while following the relative swinging of the second link and being integrated therewith, with the swinging radius of the auxiliary link being smaller than the relative swinging radius of the second link.

  • Patent number: 5180238
Abstract: In a dot impact printer, printing heads impact on an inked ribbon so as to form a pattern of dots on a paper sheet. The more often printing is carried out, the looser the central portion of the inked ribbon becomes. A sensor disposed perpendicularly against a surface of the inked ribbon detects such a condition of the inked ribbon, emitting a signal. Receiving the signal, a control means finds the inked ribbon unusable, interrupting the printing operation, and knowing a timing to replace the inked ribbon. The control means operates an alarm to urge replacement of the inked ribbon. Therefore, the dot impact printer is prevented from performing the printing operation under unfavorable conditions.

  • Patent number: 5178516
Abstract: A centrifugal compressor has diffusers which convert a high velocity, low pressure stream of fluid which flows out of an impeller to a high-velocity high-pressure flow due to the action of a purality of stator blades disposed near the outer periphery of the impeller. In this compressor, the portion of the stator blade or of an auxiliary blade which is provided in the diffuser located on the side of a front shroud is disposed closer to the impeller than the portion thereof located on the side of a main shroud, and the leading edge of the stator blade is thus inclined from the portion thereof located on the side of the main shroud to the portion thereof located on the side of the front shroud. The configuration of the front edge of a stator blade or of an auxiliary blade which is provided in the diffuser is so improved as to restrict back flow which occurs on the side of the front shroud when the flow rate is small and to lower the minimum flow rate.
