  • Publication number: 20040228308
Abstract: Systems and techniques to acquire a gated pilot signal by searching for a first gated pilot signal, deriving timing information from the search for the first gated pilot signal, and searching for a second gated pilot signal using the timing information. This can be implemented in a variety of fashions including a receiver with a searcher configured to generate a bit sequence, a correlator configured to correlate a received signal with the bit sequence, and a processor configured to detect a first gated pilot signal as a function of the correlation, derive timing information from the first gated pilot signal, and detect a second gated pilot signal by using the timing information to control the bit sequence generated by the searcher.

  • Patent number: 6819931
Abstract: A method for assigning tracking elements includes sorting a list of potential assignments according to a diversity criterion. In one example, a list of received signal instances is sorted first according to a measure of energy and then sorted again according to the diversity criterion. In a further embodiment, a demodulation element may be labeled available for assignment yet continue to output demodulated symbols in a locked state. Applications to a mobile station of a CDMA system for cellular telephony are discussed.

  • Publication number: 20040183830
Abstract: A method and system for execution in a graphical user interface environment are provided to incorporate digital image files in an email message. A template layout gallery is presented that includes a plurality of template layouts for digital image files for possible inclusion in the email message. When an indication is received that at least one digital image file is selected to be included in the email message and that one of the template layouts is to be applied to the at least one selected digital image file, the selected layout is created within the email message body according to the selected template. Prior to sending, the images are compressed.

  • Publication number: 20040183723
Abstract: A wireless remote unit performs SPS acquisition interleaved with receiving paging information over a wireless slotted paging channel and receiving data packets over a wireless data communication system. The remote unit tunes to a pilot channel, synchronizes to an internal clock of the wireless remote unit with a pilot signal transmitted over the pilot channel; and starts a search for SPS satellites after completing synchronization with the internal clock.

  • Publication number: 20040087309
Abstract: Techniques to efficiently attempt acquisition of a packet data system (e.g., an IS-856 system). If a terminal has acquired one or more channels in a voice/data system (e.g., an IS-2000 system), then it can attempt acquisition on channels in the packet data system that are co-located with the acquired channels in the voice/data system. Multiple acquisition modes may be used, and on-going acquisition attempts on the co-located channels may be performed using one acquisition mode at a time in order to reduce power consumption. Acquisition attempts may be performed in a “ping-pong” manner to improve the likelihood of acquisition. For a ping-pong search, an acquisition attempt is made on the most recently acquired channel prior to an acquisition attempt on each of the remaining channels. Received signal strength estimates may also be obtained for selected channels and may be used to determine whether or not to attempt acquisition on these channels.

  • Publication number: 20030209570
Abstract: A medicament-disposing container includes a bottle having a large diameter for storage of a medicament and an initially sealed narrow nozzle. A cap is threadably engaged on the nozzle and includes a piercer for penetrating a nozzle upon rotation of a cap on the nozzle. The piercer as a tapered end and a lumen therethrough including communication with a port in a piercer circumference. Upon penetration of the nozzle, the port is disposed proximate an internal surface of the nozzle in order to provide a restricted passage for throttling medicament therepast in order to enable dropwise dispensing of the medicament through the piercer lumen.

  • Publication number: 20030007468
Abstract: Systems and techniques are disclosed wherein a gated pilot signal can be acquired faster by checking the neighbor pilot signals of the target pilot signal. A subscriber station may frequency lock onto a wrong pilot burst because a partial correlation exists between the wrong pilot burst and an adjacent pilot burst. Comparing the strength of the target pilot signal with the strength of neighbor pilot signals enables the selection of the strongest pilot signal before the timely process of frequency locking and demodulation are initiated. Grouping pilot signals with the same symbol sequence and a pseudo-random noise increment apart enables quick acquisition of a gated pilot signal.

  • Publication number: 20020160782
Abstract: The present invention provides a method and apparatus for maximizing throughput of a data call in a wireless communication system in which data is transmitted from a wireless station, such as a mobile station, on multiple assigned channels in accordance with a known transmission standard, such as IS-95B. The multiple assigned channels include a fundamental channel and at least one supplemental channel. Data is formatted into variable rate data frames and transmitted on the fundamental channel and the supplemental channel. A wireless receiver, such as a base station, receives the multiple assigned channels. The wireless receiver demodulates and decodes data frames associated with each of the multiple assigned channels. The wireless receiver determines a likely initial data rate for each demodulated and decode data frame.

  • Patent number: 6006017
Abstract: An apparatus and method to implement a hybrid contention and polling protocol for a communications or computer network is disclosed. Various apparatus and method embodiments of the invention employ specific polls from a primary station for polling identified secondary stations of the network which may be in an active state, general polls to any of a plurality of secondary stations of the network which may be in an unresponsive state to initiate contention access to the network, and general polls for collision resolution in the event that a plurality of secondary stations may simultaneously contend for network access. Various embodiments may also include frequency channel allocation for transmission and reception of data and other information within the network. The various procedures and apparatus disclosed may also be used to apply various polling parameters to optimize network performance.

  • Patent number: 5805586
Abstract: A control station (8) is coupled to a plurality of tributary devices (20, 16, 18) by way of at least one high speed broadcast downstream data channel and more than one shared lower speed upstream data channels. The control station (8) broadcasts data to all the tributary devices (20, 16, 18) and selects a channel for a specific tributary device (20, 16, 18) to respond to a poll. After polling, the tributary device (20, 16, 18) changes the tributary device transmitter (42) to the frequency of the selected channel. The tributary device (20, 16, 18) either sends data to send to the control station (8) or sends a negative acknowledge to the control station (8). If a negative acknowledgment was transmitted, the control station (8) notifies the control station transmitter that the channel is idle.

  • Patent number: 5707614
Abstract: Apparatus and method for measuring ophthalmic formulation retention on the surface of an eye include dissolving a fluorescent macromolecule in an ophthalmic formulation to form a fluorescently labelled formulation; topically administering the fluorescently labelled formulation to an eye, said fluorescently labelled formulation forming a thin film on the eye surface. Apparatus is provided for illuminating the eye to cause fluorescence of the fluorescently labelled formulation as the fluorescently labelled formulation thin film is eliminated from the eye by normal blinking and lacrimation; and for measuring fluorescence from the thin film as a function of time.

  • Patent number: 5684802
Abstract: The system and method provide for efficiently resolving collisions in an environment where a transmitting device cannot hear collisions without a headend control station/control device, i.e., master, repeating transmission of all upstream frames in the downstream direction. This invention also prevents additional collisions from occurring between a device that is retransmitting and a device that is transmitting a packet for the first time. Further, the present invention allows continued utilization of a channel by other devices while contending devices are processing collision resolution procedures.

  • Patent number: 5651009
Abstract: A method and system provide efficient resolution of transmission collisions in a simultaneous channel access communication environment. At least a first Master device and a plurality of Slave devices utilize the steps of: (1) transmitting, by the plurality of Slave devices upon receiving a contention poll from the first Master device, information to the Master device, wherein transmissions of the Slave devices provide a collision; (2) selecting a subset of Slaves allowed to retransmit following the collision, by the first Master device using a collision resolution poll in accordance with a predetermined depth first tree search technique; and (3) retransmitting, by the subset of Slave devices, the information to the Master device, and, where another collision is obtained, recycling to step 2 and repeating steps 2 and 3 until all collisions are resolved.
