  • Patent number: 8561701
Abstract: According to an embodiment, a method of cementing in a subterranean formation comprises: introducing a cement composition into the subterranean formation, wherein the cement composition comprises: cement; water; and calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) seeds, wherein a test cement composition consisting essentially of: the cement; the water; and the C-S-H seeds, and in the same proportions as in the cement composition, develops a compressive strength of at least 1,200 psi (8.3 MPa) when tested at 24 hours, a temperature of 60° F. (15.6° C.), and a pressure of 3,000 psi (20.7 MPa); and allowing the cement composition to set. According to another embodiment, the C-S-H seeds are mesoscopic particles, nanoparticles, or combinations thereof, and wherein the C-S-H seeds are in a concentration in the range of about 1% to about 5% by weight of the cement.

  • Patent number: 8375773
Abstract: Methods of determining the wettability of a surface under predetermined conditions, wherein the surface simulates or is a downhole surface for use in an oil or gas operation. The methods include the steps of: (A) contacting the surface with at least a first fluid; and then (B) observing the surface for the presence or absence of a marker to determine the wettability of the surface. According to a first aspect of the inventions, the first fluid comprises a first marker, and the step of contacting is under first predetermined conditions. This aspect also includes the additional step of contacting the surface with a second fluid comprising a second marker. According to a second aspect of the inventions, the step of contacting the surface with the first fluid is under predetermined conditions, and the surface is contacted with a second fluid comprising a second marker.

  • Publication number: 20120305248
Abstract: According to an embodiment, a drilling fluid comprises: water and a set accelerator, wherein the drilling fluid has a 10 minute gel strength of less than 20 lb*ft/100 sq ft, wherein the drilling fluid has a density in the range of about 9 to about 14 pounds per gallon, wherein the drilling fluid remains pourable for at least 5 days, and wherein when at least one part of the drilling fluid mixes with three parts of a cement composition consisting of water and cement, the drilling fluid cement composition mixture develops a compressive strength of at least 1,200 psi. According to another embodiment, a method of using the drilling fluid comprises the steps of: introducing the drilling fluid into at least a portion of a subterranean formation, wherein at least a portion of the drilling fluid is capable of mixing with a cement composition.
