  • Patent number: 11780492
Abstract: The system (10) is configured to detect high friction in a steering gear used with a vehicle. The system (10) has a speed sensor (17), a steering angle sensor (17, 108), a plurality of vehicle sensors (23, 112) to monitor vehicle parameters and a plurality of steering system sensors (17, 108) to monitor steering system parameters. A repository stores (27, 120) the normal operating values for the vehicle and steering system sensors (17, 108). A correlation block (21, 130) compares the vehicle and steering system values with the values in the repository (27, 120). A trigger block (15) receives signals from the speed and steering angle sensors, and activating the correlation block (21, 130) when the speed and steering angle sensors are in a select range. The correlation block (21, 130) sends a warning signal if the values from the repository (27, 120) and the signal from the speed and steering angle sensors (17, 108) exceed a predetermined value.

  • Publication number: 20230286492
Abstract: A system for mitigating a sway of a trailer. The system includes a sensor set configured to sense a plurality of operating characteristics of a vehicle and an electronic processor connected to the sensor set. The electronic processor is configured to receive the plurality of operating characteristics from the sensor set, determine whether the trailer is swaying based on the plurality of operating characteristics, determine, in response to the trailer swaying, a target deceleration, determine, in response to the trailer swaying, a target yaw value, and modify a current yaw value to counter the trailer sway until reaching the target yaw value.

  • Patent number: 11708105
Abstract: An electric power steering system. The system includes a steering rack having a first end and a second end and at least one damper coupled to one of the first end and the second end. The system also includes an electronic controller configured to determine if the damper has been destroyed based upon a sensed steering angle being above a maximum steering angle threshold or based upon a received signal from an electrical circuit enclosed within the at least one damper.

  • Patent number: 11654958
Abstract: An electric power steering system. One example includes a steering control, a steering shaft connected to the steering control, a steering rack, a sensor configured to detect an operating parameter of the steering rack or an electric motor, and an electronic controller. In one example, the electronic controller is configured to receive data indicative of the operating parameter from the sensor, compare the data to a known characteristic curve, the known characteristic curve indicating potential damage to a component of the electric power steering system, and when the data matches the known characteristic curve, output an indication to a user that potential damage has occurred to the component of the electric power steering system.

  • Patent number: 11654956
Abstract: A vehicle steering intervention system and method prevents a loss of vehicle control condition or a vehicle rollover condition. The system includes a driver input torque sensor for sensing torque applied by a driver to a steering wheel, a steering angle sensor for sensing a steering angle, and a speed determination device for determining a vehicle speed. An electronic power steering unit includes an electronic processor and a memory. The electronic power steering unit determines a vehicle steering intervention threshold based on the torque sensed, the steering angle, and the vehicle speed. The electronic power steering unit predicts whether the vehicle steering intervention threshold will be exceeded within a predetermined time based on a torque gradient and/or a steering angle gradient. When the vehicle steering intervention threshold is predicted to be exceeded, the electronic power steering unit reduces a power steering assist and/or provides a counter steer force.

  • Patent number: 11423711
Abstract: A method and system for estimating the corrosion levels of a steering rack of a vehicle. Measurements of torsional force applied to the steering rack are taken with respect to the displacement of the steering rack from a neutral position and the moving velocity of the vehicle, and compared to the expected values corresponding to a non-corroded steering rack. The degree of difference between the measured and expected values may then be used to estimate the level of corrosion of the steering rack.

  • Patent number: 11062538
Abstract: A system and method for detecting corrosion in a steering rack of a vehicle based upon the performance of the steering rack in comparison to reference data collected for a non-corroded steering rack. Corrosion may be detected based upon analysis of performance data with respect to steering joggle or a data transform. Performance data may comprise displacement of the steering rack with respect to a neutral position, or the force applied to the components of the steering system.
