Patent number: 5033536Abstract: A horizontal continuous casting apparatus for metals, particularly steel, having a supply container in the metal outlet opening of which there is arranged a nozzle brick against which a separation ring rests in sealing manner, and having a continuous casting mold which is connected to the supply container and rests with the edge sides of its side walls in sealing manner against the separation ring. A reliable changing of the passage cross-section of the mold before, during and after the casting is possible in a structurally simple manner. The passage cross-section (A) of the continuous casting mold (30) is adjusted and displacement elements (40) are provided by means of which the position of the side walls (31 to 34) of the continuous casting mold (30) is adjusted. At least one side wall (31 to 34) is moveable parallel and transverse to the center line I of the outlet opening 11.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 1989Date of Patent: July 23, 1991Assignee: Mannesmann AktiengesellschaftInventors: Franz Keutgen, Peter Voss-Spilker, Achim Kubon

Patent number: 5002804Abstract: A method of coating a surface expected to come in contact with liquid metal particularly steel under utilization of combusting gases and producing a soot layer possibly under reducing conditions is improved by a post deposit treatment including a flame which may oxidize but does not reduce the soot layer for reducing the size of the particles to thereby compact, strengthen and increase adhesion of the layer.Type: GrantFiled: July 11, 1989Date of Patent: March 26, 1991Assignee: Mannesmann AGInventors: Achim Kubon, Werner Kapellner, Ewald Schmitt

Patent number: 4940075Abstract: Start-up head for continuous casting in the horizontal has a coupling member that will be embedded from three sides in molten metal, the coupling member has a hooklike portion having an undercut portion below a center line of the casting and having a point of curvature inflection, the undercut portion running from that point of inflection towards the center line along a circular path having a center of curvature above a horizontal plane that runs through the center line; a front end of the hooklike portion has a circular contour beginning from a point below the center line at a distance that is about the same distance the point of inflection has from the center line, the circular contour extending to the upper side of the member has a center of curvature above the first mentioned center of curvature but a larger distance from the center line; and the center for uncoupling the member from the casting is situated between the first and second centers of curvature.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 1989Date of Patent: July 10, 1990Assignee: Mannesmann AGInventors: Achim Kubon, Klaus-Peter Ehlert

Patent number: 4911224Abstract: A casting is extracted from a horizontal mold by means of extraction cycles with a shallow speed rise followed by a steep one, followed by a constant speed phase, followed by a rapid slowdown, and brief reversal. The casting is held by brackets which operate from above and below with separate bracket drives but parallel axes of action.Type: GrantFiled: February 9, 1988Date of Patent: March 27, 1990Assignee: Mannesmann AGInventors: Franz Keutgen, Dieter Perings, Achim Kubon, Voss-Spilker

Patent number: 4714106Abstract: A method for continuous casting of steel in a horizontal casting mode and using a cycle being comprised of an extraction stroke, a holding period, a retraction stroke and another holding period, the retraction speed, the retraction length and the holding period between an extraction stroke and a retraction stroke are maintained constant; and extraction speed and extraction length as well as the holding period between a retraction stroke and the next following extraction stroke are varied for adaptive purposes.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1985Date of Patent: December 22, 1987Assignee: Mannesmann AGInventors: Achim Kubon, Peter Voss-Spilker

Patent number: 4660621Abstract: The invention provides for a lowering of sheet stock into a mold for continuous casting. The rate of cooling of the molten metal as so fed within the mold is determined by a particular mass throughput in conjunction with the surface area being offered by the sheet stock as it is being lowered into the mold. That surface area in particular will be determined by providing more than one sheet to be run into the mold in parallel relationship. Of course the number of sheets may be determined by the laminate structure being desired. It is important that the casting of metal around the lowered sheet stock occurs outside of the range of feeding molten metal into the mold. This way it is avoided that the temperature in the mold is lowered to the point of "freezing" while on the other hand cooling is not unduly delayed.Type: GrantFiled: December 21, 1984Date of Patent: April 28, 1987Assignee: Mannesmann AGInventors: Klaus-Peter Ehlert, Achim Kubon

Patent number: 4633934Abstract: A method of horizontal continuous casting of thin and wide ingots. The method includes providing a withdrawal or extraction length of 50 to 300 mm at a speed in excess of 3 meters per second up to 20 meters per second and holding the ingot for 1 to 5 seconds. Further, the ingot can be retracted to correspond to the length reduction due to cooling. The effect of the invention is an improvement in ingot quality.Type: GrantFiled: June 27, 1985Date of Patent: January 6, 1987Assignee: Mannesmann AktiengesellschaftInventors: Klaus-Peter Ehlert, Achim Kubon, Peter Voss-Spilker

Patent number: 4628516Abstract: An electrode assembly for a furnace having a refractory lining. The electrode assembly has a conductive casing which houses a replacement body. The casing is sheathed by a conical refractory component with the broad end of the component disposed at the exterior of the furnace and the narrow end adjacent the head of the electrode. The replacement body of the electrode has a central bore, a chamber at the head of the electrode, an annular slit defined between the replacement body, and an outlet through which a cooling fluid is circulated by a suction pump connected to the electrode through the outlet. The electrode head is arranged in the refractory lining of the furnace to provide a space for the deposit of solidified molten melt which forms a protective layer over the electrode head.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 1984Date of Patent: December 9, 1986Assignee: Mannesmann AktiengesellschaftInventors: Peter Voss-Spilker, Wolfgang Reichelt, Achim Kubon, Franz Keutgen

Patent number: 4476915Abstract: A method for continuous casting of metallic strands which provides a maximum compressive stress to the strand at the precise bending point of the strand guide. In this manner, continuous casting speeds of greater than 0.8 m/min. can be utilized without the otherwise present potential for ruptures and tears. Pairs of supporting rollers are spaced along the strand guide. A bending point is defined as the precise point where the arcuate section of the strand guide becomes the linear section of the strand guide. It is at that bending point that the compressive forces on the cast metallic strand are maximized by the selected driving of the supporting rollers, located downstream of the bending point. The number of supporting rollers located upstream of the bending point is not less than twice the number of supporting rollers located downstream of the bending point.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 1981Date of Patent: October 16, 1984Inventors: Werner Rahmfeld, Achim Kubon, Dieter Stalleicken
