  • Patent number: 4578418
Abstract: A two-package air-drying coating system resistant to strong organic solvents, free from toxic heavy metals and excellent, for example, as a primer for adhering urethanes or epoxy enamels to previously painted steel, is based upon a rheologically desirable mixture of (1) plate-like filler, e.g., talc, (2) carbon black, and (3) barium lanolate with a binder composed of a polyol and a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 31, 1984
Date of Patent: March 25, 1986
Assignee: E. I. Du Pont de Nemours and Company

  • Patent number: 4230844
Abstract: Processes for preparing polymeric thickeners are provided which give, in preferred compositions, both good flow and leveling properties as well as sag resistance to coating compositions such as aqueous paints. The thickeners are prepared by conducting the polymerization in glycol such as ethylene glycol or propylene glycol with or without a little added water. The monomers polymerized consist essentially of (a) about 1-99% by weight of at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, and (b) about 99-1% by weight of at least one ester of the formula ##STR1## wherein R and R.sub.2 are each hydrogen or methyl,x is a positive integer of 5 to 80,y is an integer of 0 to 20, andR.sub.1 is alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms or alkyl phenyl where the alkyl group is from 1 to 20 carbon atoms.

  • Patent number: 4156678
Abstract: A thermosetting coating composition, of controlled rheology, of a urethane polymer that cures into a durable, flexible coating is the subject of this invention; the film-forming constituents of the coating composition are(1) an organic polyisocyanate, and(2) a polymer that has a backbone of polymerized ethylenically unsaturated monomers and has attached directly to its backbone ester groups of the following structure. ##STR1## or an isomer thereof, wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are hydrocarbon radicals; and the rheology control agents are fumed silica, attapulgus clay, copolymers of acrylonitrile/methyl acrylate of high nitrile content, modified microgels and the like. This novel coating composition is particularly useful, especially when applied over zinc rich primers, as a high quality industrial finish and can be used to paint autos, trucks, aircraft, railway equipment and the like.

  • Patent number: 4138381
Abstract: Polymeric thickeners are provided in preferred compositions which give both good flow and leveling properties as well as sag resistance to coating compositions such as aqueous paints. The thickeners as prepared comprise a polymer dissolved in a solvent at a concentration up to 50% by weight of the composition, the solvent being at least one glycol and containing during manufacture up to 50% by weight, based on the weight of glycol, of water and the polymer consists essentially of (a) about 10 to 98% by weight of at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, (b) about 1 to 50% by weight of at least one alkyl acrylate or alkyl methacrylate wherein the alkyl group is from 1 to 30 carbon atoms, and (c) about 1 to 85% by weight of at least one ester of the formula ##STR1## wherein R and R.sub.2 are each hydrogen or methyl,X is a positive integer of 5 to 80,Y is an integer of 0 to 20, andR.sub.
