  • Patent number: 9105294
Abstract: Composite magnetic recording media are described. A composite structure is a structure that is formed of multiple components. For example, a composite magnetic recording medium may include a substrate, an underlayer formed over the substrate, the underlayer defining a coating surface, and a magnetic layer formed over the coating surface of the underlayer. Composite magnetic recording media constructed according to the materials and techniques disclosed may provide dimensional flexibility while exhibiting improved physical or electromagnetic characteristics. In some examples, dimensional flexibility may be achieved by pairing a substrate greater than or equal to approximately 4000 nanometers thick with an underlayer less than or equal to approximately 890 nanometers thick.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 16, 2010
Date of Patent: August 11, 2015
    Assignee: SONY CORPORATION
Inventors: Tryg R. Jensen, Adam A. Brodd, C. Thomas Jennings, David J. Owen

  • Patent number: 7910234
Abstract: A magnetic recording tape includes an elongated substrate and a magnetic side. The magnetic side includes a support layer formed over the substrate and a magnetic recording layer formed over the support layer to define a magnetic recording surface opposite the substrate. The magnetic recording layer includes magnetic particles and a lubricant and supports a net uncompressed density of at least 30 MB/in2. The magnetic side has an extracted BET surface area of greater than 1.0 m2/g.

  • Publication number: 20070212576
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium for storing digital data includes a flexible substrate, a first magnetic side, and a second magnetic side. The flexible substrate defines a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The first magnetic side has a resistivity of less than about 2×106 ohms/square and includes a first support layer and a first magnetic layer. The first support layer is substantially non-magnetic and extends over the first surface of the substrate. The first magnetic recording layer extends over the first support layer opposite the substrate. The second magnetic side includes a second support layer and a second magnetic layer. The second support layer is substantially non-magnetic and extends over the second surface of the substrate. The second magnetic recording layer extends over the second support layer opposite the substrate.

  • Publication number: 20060274449
Abstract: A magnetic recording medium includes a substrate, a support layer, and a magnetic recording layer. The substrate defines a first surface. The support layer is formed over the first surface of the substrate. The magnetic recording layer is formed over the support layer and has a resistivity less than about 1×108 ohms/square. The magnetic recording layer defines a recording surface opposite the support layer. The recording surface has an average roughness of less than about 2.5 nm.
