    Abstract: Cationic iridium III complexes including a ligand according to formula I are provided. The linking group Z is a hydrocarbylene linking group comprising at least two carbon atoms in a chain. Ligands according to formula I have increased rigidity about the central bond linking the two five membered rings by virtue of the linking group Z, when compared to previous biimidazole related ligands. Increased photoluminescence quantum yield may been obtained in cationic iridium III complexes provided with these ligands.
