  • Publication number: 20240044296
Abstract: Operating a gaseous fuel engine system includes controlling at least one of a delivery location, a delivery timing, or in situ mixing of a gaseous fuel with air, based on at least one engine system parameter upon the basis of which a blowby amount of a gaseous fuel to a crankcase varies. Crankcase accumulation of the gaseous fuel is maintained below a flammability limit. Related apparatus and control logic is also disclosed.
    Type: Application
    Filed: August 3, 2022
    Publication date: February 8, 2024
    Applicant: Caterpillar Inc.
Inventors: Jaswinder Singh, Eric Lee Schroeder, Adam Joseph Clute, Aaron Scott Ness

  • Patent number: 11773795
Abstract: Operating a gaseous fuel engine system includes spark-igniting a gaseous hydrogen fuel and air in a prechamber sparkplug to ignite a main charge containing gaseous hydrogen fuel and air in a cylinder. Operating the gaseous fuel engine system also includes determining a preignition condition and conveying cooling air to the prechamber sparkplug based on the preignition condition to limit preignition of gaseous hydrogen fuel and air in the prechamber sparkplug. Related apparatus and control logic is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 11674595
Abstract: A scraper ring for a piston includes a top surface, a bottom surface, an inner surface, and an outer surface. The top surface has a first planar portion and a first angled portion. The bottom surface has a second planar portion and a second angled portion. The second angled portion is configured to slidably contact the first angled portion to adjust a diameter of the scraper ring. The inner surface connects the top surface to the bottom surface. The outer surface is opposite to the top surface and is configured to form 360 degrees of contact with a wall of a cylinder to substantially limit an amount of oil entering a combustion chamber of the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 11306678
Abstract: A piston includes an annular body including a crown portion defining a longitudinal axis, a radial direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis, and a circumferential direction. The crown portion includes a top squish surface, and a circumferential annular wall extending downwardly axially from the top squish surface as well as a skirt. A first piston ring receiving groove is spaced away from the top squish surface, an upper land and a lower land extend from the first piston ring receiving groove, and a bottom blend connects the lower land to the first piston ring receiving groove.

  • Patent number: 11047293
Abstract: Operating an internal combustion engine includes conveying fuel of spray plumes of directly injected fuel out of a swirl pocket in a combustion bowl in a piston, and impinging the fuel upon an anti-sooting ramp transitioning between a radially inner shelf surface of the combustion bowl and a radially outer squish surface of the piston. The shelf surface is spaced an axial distance (FA) from a plane defined by the squish surface that is from 1% to 2% of an outer diameter (OD) dimension of the piston. Impinging the fuel upon the anti-sooting ramp directs the fuel upwardly from the squish surface to limit wall-wetting in the combustion cylinder.
