Publication number: 20070123992Abstract: A provisional component for use with differently sized first and second prosthetic orthopedic components. The provisional component has a configuration which is substantially similar to the first prosthetic component and has a predefined correspondence to the second prosthetic component. The provisional component is mounted on a bone to assess the fit of the first prosthetic component. The provisional component includes a referencing element for defining a reference point on the bone if the fit of the provisional component indicates that the second prosthetic component should be used. An instrument guide is aligned with the reference point and used to properly position a surgical instrument to prepare the bone to receive the second prosthetic component. The provisional and prosthetic components may all be femoral components which have an articulating surface defining a single condylar-shaped projection.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 21, 2006Publication date: May 31, 2007Applicant: ZIMMER TECHNOLOGY, INC.Inventor: Adam Sanford

Publication number: 20060247647Abstract: A method and apparatus for correcting limb alignment in a unicondylar knee arthroplasty and linking the distal femoral cut and the proximal tibial cut. Alignment rods are connected to a spacing apparatus to facilitate correction of limb alignment. The alignment rods are positioned along the mechanical axis of the femur and the tibia and the knee joint is positioned to correct alignment. A spacing apparatus is positioned in the relevant knee compartment and utilized to hold the knee in position to correct limb alignment. The spacing apparatus includes a femoral cut slot through which the distal femoral cut is made and further includes tibial affixment apertures through which a headless securing device can be positioned to secure the spacing apparatus to the tibia. After the distal femoral resection is complete, the spacing apparatus is removed, with the headless securing devices remaining positioned in the tibia.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 10, 2006Publication date: November 2, 2006Applicant: ZIMMER TECHNOLOGY, INC.Inventors: Robert Hodorek, Adam Sanford, Richard Williamson, Paul Saenger, Toby Farling

Publication number: 20060217734Abstract: An apparatus for resecting a distal femoral condyle includes a resection guide defining a first bone fixation aperture extending about an axis. The resection guide further defines a first bone saw slot and a second bone saw slot. The resection guide is configured to position the first bone fixation aperture relative to the condyle. The resection guide is further configured to concurrently arcuately translate the first bone saw slot and the second bone saw slot relative to the axis. A knee replacement kit includes a femoral implant defining a first plan contour. The kit further includes a resection guide defining a second plan contour modeling the first plan contour.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 9, 2005Publication date: September 28, 2006Inventors: Adam Sanford, Scott Steffensmeier

Publication number: 20060155294Abstract: The present invention relates to a bone-cutting guide used during arthroplasty. The bone-cutting guide is intended to be temporarily positioned against the distal femur or proximal tibia bone surface and to receive a cutting member. The bone-cutting guide is intended to cut the bone generally transverse to the length of the bone, and includes a main body and a paddle. The main body has a width defined between first and second surfaces. A cutting tool receiving portion, which is configured and arranged to receive the cutting member, extends from the first surface to the second surface. The main body is configured to be placed against a side surface of the bone. The paddle extends from the main body and includes a bone-contacting surface that is configured and arranged to be positioned generally parallel against the distal femur or the proximal tibia bone surface.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 11, 2005Publication date: July 13, 2006Inventors: Scott Steffensmeier, Adam Sanford

Patent number: 5549583Abstract: A connector which includes a female part having a barrel-shaped body, with a socket extending into the female part from one end of the barrel-shaped body. The socket includes first, second, and third step portions which respectively receive a flange, a shoulder, and a stem of a male part. A lip extends radially inwardly from the barrel-shaped body of the female part, with the lip having an inner diameter smaller than the outer diameter of the flange of the male part. The male part can be inserted into the female part by inserting the flange of the male part past the lip of the female part, such that the male and female parts are snapped together. In a presently preferred embodiment, a seal ring is disposed between the male and female parts, and the seal ring is compressed in an axial direction, thereby providing the connector with a fluid tight seal.Type: GrantFiled: August 4, 1995Date of Patent: August 27, 1996Assignee: Adam Spence CorporationInventors: Adam Sanford, John Cheer, James Wood
